{"id":286861,"date":"2024-05-04T05:20:44","date_gmt":"2024-05-04T05:20:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/?p=286861"},"modified":"2024-05-05T06:47:31","modified_gmt":"2024-05-05T06:47:31","slug":"gaza-reconstruction-could-take-80-years-damage-unseen-since-world-war-ii-un","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/?p=286861","title":{"rendered":"Gaza reconstruction could take 80 years, damage unseen since World War II: UN"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Press TV \u2013 May 3, 2024<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><strong>A United Nations official says the destruction caused by Israel\u2019s war on the Gaza Strip is unseen since the Second World\u00a0War, estimating that the reconstruction of the Palestinian territory could take 80 years and cost up to $40 billion.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a press conference in the Jordanian capital Amman on Thursday, Abdallah al-Dardari, UN assistant secretary-general and director\u00a0of the UN Development Program\u2019s (UNDP) regional office for the Arab states, added that the Israeli aggression has completely or partially destroyed 72 percent of all residential buildings in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe United Nations Development Programme\u2019s initial estimates for the reconstruction of\u2026 the Gaza Strip surpass $30 billion and could reach up to $40 billion,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cThe scale of the destruction is huge and unprecedented\u2026 This is a mission that the global community has not dealt with since World War II.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also estimated the Israeli attacks have left 37 million tons of rubble across Gaza, warning that the \u201ccolossal figure\u201d is increasing every day\u00a0and approaching 40 million tons.<\/p>\n<p>Dardari further said that the rebuilding of the Gaza Strip through a normal process could take decades.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, the UN Development Programme released an assessment, noting that Gaza would need &#8220;approximately 80 years to restore all the fully destroyed housing units&#8221; Palestine Highlights (@PalHighlight) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PalHighlight\/status\/1786058671723610329?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 2, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is therefore important that we act quickly to re-house people in decent housing and restore their lives to normal \u2013 economically, socially, in terms of health and education,\u201d he noted. \u201cThis is our top priority, and it must be achieved within the first three years following the cessation of hostilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The UN official\u00a0also stressed that the Gaza genocide\u00a0has wiped out\u00a040 years worth of investments in the territory&#8217;s human development, saying, \u201cWe are almost back in the \u201980s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Israel unleashed its US-backed Gaza onslaught on October 7 after the Palestinian Hamas resistance group carried out a surprise operation against the occupying entity in retaliation for its intensified atrocities against the Palestinian people.<\/p>\n<p>The Tel Aviv regime has so far killed at least\u00a034,596 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured 77,816\u00a0others.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u20181.74mn Palestinians pushed into poverty since Gaza war\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Additionally, on Thursday, a\u00a0joint study\u00a0by the UNDP and the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), found that the\u00a0poverty rate in Palestine has surged to 58.4 percent since Israel\u2019s Gaza offensive, pushing nearly 1.74 million additional people into poverty.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, it added, Palestine\u2019s gross domestic product (GDP) plummeted by 26.9 percent, resulting in a loss of $7.1 billion compared to a 2023 baseline.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The relentless Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip has set back Palestine\u2019s overall socio-economic development by more than 20 years, according to new <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UNDP?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@UNDP<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UNESCWA?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@UNESCWA<\/a> report<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Hdq2YBtZX0\">https:\/\/t.co\/Hdq2YBtZX0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash;
