The headlines are full of measles at the moment, in the way that always reeks of coordination.<\/p>\n

The measles outbreak in the US has been simmering away for weeks, but was brought back to the front burner in the last few days. The Daily Mail headlining:<\/p>\n

America on verge of measles MAYHEM: Hundreds feared to be infected in California and Arizona outbreaks as US suffers year\u2019s worth of cases in two months<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not just Arizona and California either. Chicago<\/a>, Florida<\/a> and Philadelphia all have \u201coutbreaks\u201d of their own.<\/p>\n

An article in the Atlantic headlined \u201cThe Return of Measles\u201d<\/a>, claims there have been measles outbreaks in 19 separate states.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, on our side of the pond, a measles outbreak that started in Birmingham in January has apparently spread north and south. The UK\u2019s total cases are apparently up to ~733<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In Ireland, the scary story is that one person on a flight from Abu Dhabi to Dublin<\/a> tested positive for measles a couple of days ago. That number has since risen to three! The authorities are desperately hunting down<\/a> anyone who was on that plane.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s three measles scare-stories in three different countries at the same time, with maybe more on the way<\/p>\n

To quote Ian Fleming, \u201conce is happenstance, twice is a coincidence and three times is enemy action\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n

So what is this \u201cenemy action\u201d? Where is this story going?<\/p>\n

First, let\u2019s get this out of the way: This is not a public health scare. Not a real<\/em> one. Measles is not especially dangerous, with a reported case fatality ratio of about 0.02% in Western countries<\/a>, meaning for every 5000 people who get measles 4999 will survive.<\/p>\n

So what\u2019s with the scary headlines? What\u2019s the endgame here?<\/p>\n

To answer that we need to ask \u201cwho are the media are blaming?\u201d, and as with most issues these days there are two answers to that.<\/p>\n

Yes, it\u2019s another binary.<\/p>\n

On the one hand, the \u201cleft\u201d arm of media is busily blaming \u201canti-vaxxers\u201d.<\/strong> The \u201cright\u201d arm of the media is blaming illegal immigrants.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s examine the left side first.<\/p>\n

Last week the New York Times headlined<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Vaccination Rates Dipped for Years. Now, There\u2019s a Measles Outbreak in Britain.<\/p>\n

Then, two days ago the Los Angeles Times reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n

More parents are delaying their kids\u2019 vaccines, and it\u2019s alarming pediatricians<\/p>\n

The Louisville Courier-Journal has an article in a similar vein<\/a>, claiming \u201cCovid denialism allows other infectious diseases to spread\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n

In the UK the \u201cliberal\u201d press is laying the blame at the feet of the so-called \u201cWakefield generation\u201d<\/a> (referencing Dr Andrew Wakefield<\/a>, who publicized a possible link between MMR and autism in the 1990s).<\/p>\n

In Canada, TVO.me, a not-for-profit run by the Ontario Board of Education, opines<\/a> \u201cWith measles making a comeback globally, we need to talk about vaccine hesitancy\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Having established \u201cblame\u201d, is there a proposed \u201csolution\u201d?<\/p>\n

Of course \u2014 making the MMR vaccine mandatory.<\/p>\n

The UK\u2019s NHS has already launched a major MMR vaccine drive<\/a>, with accompanying talk in the media<\/a> claiming \u201cWant to get rid of measles? Make the vaccine compulsory for kids\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
