{"id":282507,"date":"2024-02-26T15:56:30","date_gmt":"2024-02-26T15:56:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/?p=282507"},"modified":"2024-02-27T07:57:31","modified_gmt":"2024-02-27T07:57:31","slug":"jacob-rothschild-financier-and-member-of-the-banking-family-dies-at-87","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/?p=282507","title":{"rendered":"Jacob Rothschild, financier and member of the banking family, dies at 87"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Jane Croft \u2013 The Guardian Feb 26, 2024<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>Jacob Rothschild, the financier, philanthropist and scion of the Rothschild banking family, has died aged 87.<\/p>\n<p>The City grandee started his career at the family bank NM Rothschild &amp; Sons before leaving in 1980 to co-found a number of companies including J Rothschild Assurance Group, now St James\u2019s Place, with Sir Mark Weinberg.<\/p>\n<p>Lord Rothschild held a number of senior roles in the City, including deputy chair of BSkyB between 2003 and 2008. He was <a href=\"https:\/\/partners-cap.com\/our-team\/meet-the-shareholders\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">chair<\/a> of RIT Capital Partners, one of the largest investment trusts quoted on the London Stock Exchange, from 1988 to 2019.<\/p>\n<p>He played a prominent national role in arts and philanthropy, including as chair of trustees of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/artanddesign\/national-gallery\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">National Gallery<\/a> between 1985 and 1991 and chair of the National Heritage Memorial Fund between 1992 and 1998, which oversaw the distribution of \u00a31.2bn in grants to the heritage sector<\/p>\n<p>He was active in the work to restore Somerset House in London and was awarded the order of merit in 2002, which recognises outstanding service in the field of arts, literature, learning and science.<\/p>\n<p>Tributes were paid on Monday from the world of business and politics. St James\u2019s Place said it was \u201cdeeply saddened\u201d. \u201cAs a hugely accomplished financier and a co-founder of St James\u2019s Place, Lord Rothschild leaves an extraordinary legacy in helping to shape the financial advice profession in the UK,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>The former chancellor George Osborne, now chair of trustees at the British Museum, paid tribute in a post on X. \u201cHe made the very most of the privilege he was born into, contributing hugely to the cultural and commercial life of Britain,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/George_Osborne\/status\/1762074786669236549\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Osborne wrote<\/a>. \u201cHis contributions to the Waddesdon gallery make it one of the jewels of the British Museum. Smart, curious, full of new projects and with a dry humour.
