A non-exhausting list would include France, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Ireland, Italy, and of course Belgium \u2013 with farmers converging to Brussels to protest in front of the European Parliament.<\/p>\n<p>Mostly, the MSM tried to characterize the protest as being about \u2018subsidies\u2019 and \u2018protection against products from lesser regulated countries\u2019 \u2013 but a core demand that united all nationalities was the stark rejection of the \u2018Global warming\u2019 climate alarmism, and the policies and regulations derived from it.<\/p>\n<p>One such monstrosity is the \u2018Sustainable Use Regulation\u2019 (SUR), who aimed to halve the use of pesticides \u2013 and possibly bankrupt all the farmers in the process.<\/p>\n<p>Now, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed withdrawing the EU\u2019s plan, calling it a \u2018symbol of polarization\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/europe\/eus-von-der-leyen-wants-cancel-plan-halve-pesticide-use-after-farmer-protests-2024-02-06\/\">Reuters<\/a> reported:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c\u2018Our farmers deserve to be listened to\u2019, Von der Leyen told the European Parliament.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u2018I know that they are worried about the future of agriculture and their future as farmers. But they also know that agriculture needs to move to a more sustainable model of production so that their farms remain profitable in the years to come\u2019.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Besides farmers protesting against rising costs, taxes, and cheap food imports, one main demand is against constraints meant \u2018to fight climate change\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>European farmers\u2019 lobby COPA-COGECA welcomed Von der Leyen\u2019s remarks:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c\u2018The EU Commission finally acknowledges that its approach was not the right one, and so strengthens the credibility and importance of the current strategic dialogue\u2019, the lobby\u2019s president Christiane Lambert said in a post on social media platform X.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This was not the first or only \u2018concession\u2019 by the EU. Last week, the EU proposed <em>\u2018an exemption on rules requiring farmers to leave part of their land fallow\u2019<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cBelgian\u2019s Prime Minister Alexander De Croo welcomed the proposal in a post on X, saying it was \u2018crucial we keep our farmers on board to a more sustainable future of farming, as part of our determination to get the Green Deal done\u2019.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>So, in an attempt to undo the knot that farmers tied around Europe\u2019s cities and roads, Ursula von der Leyen announced today (6) the withdrawal of the SUR, marking <em>\u2018the first defeat of the Green Deal\u2019<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/my-europe\/2024\/02\/06\/von-der-leyen-announces-withdrawal-of-contentious-pesticide-law-the-first-defeat-of-the-gr\">Euronews<\/a> reported:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe so-called Sustainable Use Regulation (SUR) was first tabled in June 2022 with the ambitious goal of\u00a0slashing by half the use of pesticides by 2030. It also envisioned\u00a0the total prohibition of these\u00a0products in sensitive areas, such as urban green spaces and\u00a0Natura 2000 sites, and promoted the uptake of low-risk alternatives.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Chemical pesticides are said to constitute a major source of pollution, and have reportedly been linked to <em>\u2018biodiversity loss, poor-quality water, degraded soils, pest resistance and chronic illnesses\u2019<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c\u2018The Commission proposed SUR, with the worthy aim to reduce the risks of chemical plant protection products\u2019, von der Leyen said on Tuesday, speaking before the European Parliament in Strasbourg.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u2018But the SUR proposal has become a symbol of polarization. It has been rejected by the European Parliament. There is no progress anymore in the Council either.
