Israel\u2019s finance minister accused ‘two million’ Palestinians living in Gaza<\/strong><\/a> of having the ‘desire to slaughter and rape Jews’ as he defended the displacement of civilians in the coastal territory and his country’s reported ‘voluntary relocation’ plans.<\/p>\n

Bezalel Smotrich, a far-right politician and head of the ultranationalist Religious Zionism party that is part of Israel’s ruling coalition,\u00a0said Israel should ‘encourage’ the territory’s approximately 2.4 million Palestinians to relocate to other countries – with reports suggesting Israel has held talks with the\u00a0Democratic Republic of the Congo.<\/p>\n

He, along with fellow far-right politician Itamar\u00a0Ben-Gvir, also earlier called for the return of Jewish settlers to Gaza at the end of their country’s ongoing war against Hamas<\/strong><\/a> – in comments that were slammed by the US and other Western allies.<\/p>\n

But in the face of the criticism,\u00a0Smotrich today doubled down on his remarks.<\/p>\n

In a post on X, he wrote that 70 per cent of Israelis support ‘voluntary migration’ for Palestinians from Gaza to other countries, saying Israel couldn’t allow itself to live so close to a ‘hotbed of hate.’ He did not say where the figure came from.<\/p>\n

He wrote: ‘…a small country like ours cannot afford a reality where four minutes away from our settlements there is a hotbed of hatred and terrorism where two million people who wake up every morning with aspiration\u00a0for the destruction of the State of Israel and with a desire to slaughter and rape and murder Jews wherever they are.<\/p>\n

‘Israeli society will not agree to the continuation of this reality in Gaza, we are required to rethink and share with our friends in the international community that will bring peace, security and prosperity to all the peoples of the region and allow the residents of the south to return to their homes in safety and peace.’<\/p>\n

According to one report,\u00a0Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition is conducting secret talks with the Democratic Republic of the Congo and other nations over accepting thousands of immigrants from Gaza.<\/p>\n

The vast majority of Gaza’s 2.4 million residents have been forced out of their homes by nearly three months of fighting between Hamas militants and Israel.<\/p>\n

The health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza says at least 22,185 people have been killed in the war, mostly civilians, while Israeli airstrikes have left much of the territory in ruins.<\/p>\n

Expelling civilians during a conflict or creating unliveable conditions which force them to leave is deemed a war crime.<\/p>\n

Fighting erupted after Hamas’s October 7 attack which killed around 1,140 people, most of them civilians, according to a tally based on official Israeli figures.<\/p>\n

Talk of mass displacement brings up difficult memories for Palestinians, some 700,000 of whom fled or were forced to flee during the war leading to Israel’s creation in 1948.<\/p>\n

Smotrich is a key partner in Netanyahu’s government, Israel’s most nationalist and conservative. He has largely been sidelined by the War Cabinet, of which he is not a member.<\/p>\n

South Africa has cited statements by Israeli officials as part of its argument at the International Court of Justice that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.<\/p>\n
