Introduction \u2013 Nov 23, 2023<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Unprovoked knife attacks in Dublin have left five injured, two of them seriously, a woman and a little girl. Of the five injured, three were small children aged between 5 and 6.<\/p>\n

I knew when the incident was reported on the BBC six o\u2019clock news that something crucial was being omitted. That\u2019s because whenever the BBC reports a crime if the suspect is not white the broadcaster will rarely mention this.<\/p>\n

Hours later a twitter post (below) confirmed my suspicions.<\/p>\n

Readers will note that the BBC only describes the suspect as a \u201cman\u201d, although eyewitnesses quoted elsewhere and not by the BBC were more expansive. Why is the BBC not mentioning these details? Why is it effectively censoring news reports? Ed.<\/p>\n

What do we know?<\/h3>\n

Supt Liam Geraghty briefed the press a short while ago. At the early stages in the investigation, here’s what we know so far:<\/p>\n

  • Garda\u00ed were called shortly after 13:30 local time to an incident at Parnell Square East <\/strong>in Dublin<\/li>\n
  • A woman in her 30s, a man in his 50s, a boy (5) and two girls (5 and 6) were injured<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • All were taken to hospitals<\/strong> – the boy has been discharged<\/li>\n
  • The adult woman is being treated for serious injuries<\/strong> and the five-year-old girl is having emergency medical treatment<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • The adult man is a “person of interest”<\/strong> in the investigation and is currently receiving medical treatment<\/li>\n
  • Garda\u00ed believe a male attacked a woman<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Garda\u00ed are following a “definite line of inquiry”<\/strong> although they have “an open mind”<\/strong> at this time<\/li>\n
  • The Supt says Garda\u00ed do not believe the incident was “terror-related”<\/strong> and that it appears to be a “stand alone attack”<\/li>\n
  • He is appealing for information or video footage of the incident<\/strong> and urges the public “not to make rash judgements on what may have happened”<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
