Israel says it has refused visa to UN official to ‘teach them a lesson’<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Israel says it has refused a visa to UN humanitarian affairs chief Martin Griffiths as a result of comments at the UN by secretary-general Ant\u00f3nio Guterres.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Israeli media reports that Israel\u2019s ambassador to the UN Gilad Erdan said on army radio:<\/p>\n

Due to his remarks we will refuse to issue visas to UN representatives. We have already refused a visa for under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs Martin Griffiths. The time has come to teach them a lesson.<\/p>\n

Israel has called on UN secretary general Guterres<\/a> to resign after he said that the\u201cappalling attacks\u201d<\/a> by Hamas against Israel<\/a> on 7 October cannot justify the \u201ccollective punishment of the Palestinian people\u201d, and spoke of \u201cthe clear violations of international humanitarian law that we are witnessing in Gaza.\u201d<\/p>\n

Guterres had said \u201cNothing can justify the deliberate killing, injuring and kidnapping of civilians \u2013 or the launching of rockets against civilian targets. All hostages must be treated humanely and released immediately and without conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Addressing the UN, the secretary-general then went on to say the attack on Israel did not happen \u201cin a vacuum\u201d and followed \u201c56 years of suffocating occupation\u201d for the Palestinian people by Israel, adding \u201cThey have seen their land steadily devoured by settlements and plagued by violence; their economy stifled; their people displaced and their homes demolished. Their hopes for a political solution to their plight have been vanishing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Israel\u2019s ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan<\/strong>, said Guterres should resign, calling the speech \u201cshocking\u201d, saying that \u201che views the massacre committed by Nazi Hamas<\/a> terrorists in a distorted and immoral manner\u201d.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Turkey\u2019s foreign minister has warned the world that the only possible outcomes for Israel<\/a> and Palestine are \u201ca lasting peace or a world war\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In comments made in Doha, Al Jazeera quotes Hakan Fidan<\/strong> saying:<\/p>\n

We are at a turning point in history. Either we reach a lasting peace or a world war will break out. We call on all parties, regional and international stakeholders, to listen to the voice of reason. And those who are encouraging Israel to continue its crimes are also liable. If we don\u2019t act fast, we will have darker days to come.<\/p>\n
