The Wall is a thought provoking new\u00a0play based on Douglas Watkinson\u2019s own experiences.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At the age of sixty, David visits a\u00a0British military cemetery in Israel. For the first time in his life he is about to\u00a0call upon the grave of his father Ralph who was blown up in 1947 at the\u00a0age of twenty five\u00a0by the Jewish Stern Gang.<\/span><\/p>\n

The play is a unique encounter between David, a middle-aged Englishman, and his dead father Ralph,\u00a0a young\u00a0English Corporal at the time of the\u00a0British Mandate. It is a meeting through which we, the audience,\u00a0can ‘witness’ six decades of Israeli brutality,\u00a0through the eyes of a dead British Corporal buried in foreign soil along side thousands of his peers. The play is a cleverly constructed\u00a0dialogue between a sixty year old son: a man who grew up in post WWII Britain, an indoctrinated gentleman\u00a0 and a liberated dead father who is\u00a0free to call things what they actually\u00a0are.<\/span><\/p>\n

The play is a journey into the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.\u00a0 It dares to look into the role of the British in the creation of\u00a0yet another endless war.\u00a0 It is also courageous enough to review and assess\u00a0the cruelty of Jewish terror-groups towards the British military. It goes deeper than most political commentators and academics, for it is brave enough to look honestly at\u00a0the imaginary distinction between Jews, Israel and Zionism. Ralph is obviously impervious to political correctness \u2013\u00a0he sees Zionists and Israelis for what they are \u2013\u00a0namely, Jews. Initially, David couldn\u2019t agree less, insisting that Jews are kind and compassionate people. He would contend, that it is merely the Israelis and Zionists who may be slightly problematic.<\/span><\/p>\n

As the play evolves, David witnesses Israeli brutality for himself. And\u00a0once he has visited a Palestinian home he falls in love with Palestine, immediately empathising with the Palestinian plight. Overnight, David is transformed into a Palestinian advocate. He then meets Israeli soldiers\u00a0at a\u00a0road block and\u00a0he encounters\u00a0 the arrogance of an MIT lieutenant, a new Jewish-American\u00a0immigrant who claims ownership of someone else\u2019s land. He also meets a Romanian\u00a0 female sergeant who teaches him a lesson in Israeli rudeness.<\/span><\/p>\n

These events are enough to transform David into an anti-separation wall activist.\u00a0 Needless to say that by that time, the old school English tie is replaced by a Palestinian scarf, hung loosely around his neck.<\/span><\/p>\n

As the\u00a0the play unfolds,\u00a0we witness a continuum of six decades of merciless vengeance\u00a0enacted by new comers, people who do not belong to Palestine. You can call them Israelis, or Zionists, or Jews \u2013\u00a0in fact it doesn\u2019t really matter \u2013 whoever or whatever they are, \u00a0they must be stopped.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The play is on for another week. If you happen to be in or around\u00a0London, you don\u2019t want to miss it. The play once again\u00a0reaffirms my view that art and beauty are leading the journey towards justice, for art\u00a0excels\u00a0precisely where academia, politics, activism, journalism and the so called Left have failed so miserably.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
