U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland became visibly upset after a House lawmaker pressed him about the FBI producing a memo earlier this year that labeled so-called Radical-Traditional Catholics as potential domestic terrorists.<\/p>\n

During a hearing before the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday, Garland faced a barrage of questions over the Biden Administration\u2019s actions over the last two years.<\/p>\n

But when Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ) asked about the Department of Justice and FBI persecuting traditional Catholics, the question triggered an enraged response from the attorney general.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have no idea what \u2018traditional\u2019 means here,\u201d Garland said.<\/p>\n

\u201cCatholics that go to church,\u201d Van Drew replied. \u201cYes or no?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe idea that someone with my family background would discriminate against any religion is so outrageous \u2014 is so absurd,\u201d Garland said.<\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Attorney General,\u201d Van Drew interrupted. \u201cIt was your FBI that did this. It was your FBI, and we have the memos and emails [sic] sending undercover agents into Catholic churches.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, FBI whistleblower Kyle Seraphin first published in UncoverDC, an unclassified intelligence document out of the bureau\u2019s Richmond field office that targeted traditional Catholics who are \u201cracially or ethnically motivated violent extremists in radical-traditionalist Catholic ideology.\u201d<\/p>\n

Seraphin wrote in his piece for UncoverDC that the intelligence document shows a permissive tolerance within the bureau for left-leaning ideological actors that furthers the weaponization of the FBI against conservative Americans and could lead to \u201cinvestigations into Americans in violation of their God-given, First Amendment-protected civil liberties.\u201d<\/p>\n

Almost immediately after the document leaked, FBI authorities purged the ant-Catholic memo from its system, saying the bureau would \u201cnever conduct investigative activities or open an investigation based solely on First Amendment protected activity.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the Wednesday hearing, Garland said that the memo \u201cappalled\u201d both him and FBI Director Christopher Wray.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre they extremists or not \u2014 I\u2019m asking a simple question,\u201d Van Drew said. \u201cSay no, if you think that was wrong?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCatholics are not extremists, no,\u201d Garland admitted.<\/p>\n

When Van Drew asked if federal officials fired anyone for producing the memo, Garland said, \u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n
