{"id":273419,"date":"2023-09-18T06:50:07","date_gmt":"2023-09-18T06:50:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/?p=273419"},"modified":"2023-09-19T15:15:05","modified_gmt":"2023-09-19T15:15:05","slug":"erdogan-threatens-to-part-ways-from-eu-after-critical-european-parliament-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/?p=273419","title":{"rendered":"Erdo\u011fan threatens to \u2018part ways\u2019 from EU after critical European Parliament report"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Camille Cijs \u2013 Politico Sept 16, 2023<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>Turkey\u2019s President Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan on Saturday slammed a report from the European Parliament on the country\u2019s EU accession talks and threatened to \u201cpart ways\u201d from the bloc.<\/p>\n<p>Questioned by journalists about the report, Erdo\u011fan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/tr\/gundem\/cumhurbaskani-erdogan-avrupa-birligi-ile-gerekirse-yollari-ayirabiliriz\/2993361\">said<\/a> that \u201cthe EU is trying to break away from Turkey,\u201d according to Turkish state media Anadolu Agency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will make our evaluations against these developments and if necessary, we can part ways with the EU,\u201d Erdo\u011fan said ahead of a trip to attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York.<\/p>\n<p>The European Parliament <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/doceo\/document\/A-9-2023-0247_EN.html\">report<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Europarl_CAT\/status\/1702292108999066046?s=20\">adopted<\/a> this week in Strasbourg, said talks over Ankara\u2019s accession to the bloc should not be resumed in current circumstances, voicing the EU\u2019s concerns about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/turkeys-erdogan-says-country-could-part-ways-with-eu-if-necessary-2023-09-16\/\">human rights and rule of law violations<\/a>. Instead, European lawmakers advocated finding \u201ca parallel and realistic framework\u201d for relations between Brussels and Ankara.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have recently seen a renewed interest from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2023\/09\/07\/absence-presence-dominance-g20-00114544\">Turkish government<\/a> in reviving the EU accession process,\u201d said the lead lawmaker on the file, Spanish Socialist Nacho S\u00e1nchez Amor, upon adoption of the report on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/is-turkey-now-joining-the-eu-no-but-the-eu-is-engaging-nato\/\">will not happen<\/a> because of geopolitical bargaining, but only when the Turkish authorities show real interest in stopping the continuing backsliding in fundamental freedoms and rule of law in the country,\u201d S\u00e1nchez Amor said.<\/p>\n<p>Tukrey-EU ties have deteriorated amid Erdo\u011fan\u2019s increasingly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/turkey-recep-tayyip-erdogan-the-master-haggler-of-world-politics-at-vilnius-nato-summit\/\">autocratic behavior<\/a> following a failed coup attempt in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Talks over Turkey\u2019s accession to the bloc have stagnated for years.
