{"id":272414,"date":"2023-08-19T14:22:00","date_gmt":"2023-08-19T14:22:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/?p=272414"},"modified":"2023-08-21T07:14:55","modified_gmt":"2023-08-21T07:14:55","slug":"russia-has-to-send-sobering-signals-to-west-about-risks-of-nuclear-war-lavrov","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/?p=272414","title":{"rendered":"Russia has to send &#8216;sobering signals&#8217; to West about risks of nuclear war: Lavrov"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Press TV \u2013 Aug 19, 2023<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><strong>Russia\u2019s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov says Moscow has to repeatedly\u00a0send \u201csobering signals\u201d to the West in order to prevent a direct armed confrontation of nuclear powers.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Speaking to Russian official news magazine, <em>The International Affairs,<\/em> Lavrov warned that the United States and its NATO allies risk ending up in \u201ca situation of direct armed confrontation of nuclear powers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cWe believe such a development should be prevented. That\u2019s why we have to remind [ourselves] about the existence of high military and political risks and send sobering signals to our opponents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Lavrov further said that having nuclear weapons defends Russia from external security dangers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cThe possession of nuclear arms is today the only possible response to some of the significant external threats to the security of our country,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Moscow has repeatedly warned the US and its NATO allies about the risk of a nuclear confrontation.<\/p>\n<p>The US and NATO countries provide the majority of Ukraine&#8217;s military assistance since Russia launched its \u201cspecial military operation\u201d in Ukraine in February last year.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, former Russian President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presstv.ir\/Detail\/2023\/07\/31\/708045\/Russia-nuclear-weapon-Ukraine\">Dmitry Medvedev<\/a> said that Moscow would have to use nuclear weapons if Ukraine&#8217;s counteroffensive against Russian forces proved successful.<\/p>\n<p>Medvedev was speaking about the counteroffensive Kiev launched in early June, hoping to push south toward the Crimean Peninsula by the end of the year.
