Nurses in Kentucky<\/a> were told they could face \u201cdiscipline\u201d after they were mandated to take an implicit bias training that claimed there is a \u201chistory of racism in healthcare.\u201d<\/p>\n

The training, required by the Kentucky Board of Nursing, instructs the health care workers to \u201crecognize the history of racism in healthcare,\u201d according<\/a> to a new report from The Washington Examiner. The training, which was required by July 1, included discussions that said it was racist to suggest \u201cinstitutional racism\u201d didn\u2019t exist or saying that people could advance through hard work.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn order to lead to meaningful change, any exploration of implicit bias must be situated as part of a much larger conversation on racism and bias,\u201d says a slide from the training, which was put on by Kentucky Nurses Association Board of Directors Treasurer Arica Brandford and CEO Delanor Manson.<\/p>\n

Nurses were taught that examples of \u201ccovert racism\u201d included \u201cwhite silence,\u201d \u201cdenying institutional racism,\u201d the phrase \u201cthere\u2019s only one human race,\u201d \u201cbootstrap theory,\u201d \u201cEurocentric school curricula,\u201d \u201cweaponizing whiteness,\u201d \u201cfetishizing POC,\u201d \u201cclaiming \u2018reverse racism,’\u201d \u201cexcusing\/ \u2018white-splaining\u2019 racism,\u201d and suggesting there was no such thing as white privilege.<\/p>\n

Many nurses were frustrated with the class and objected to the content, but were worried they would be disciplined if they chose not to complete it.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey pretty much said we\u2019re all guilty of being racist, and we need to examine the way that we take care of patients and change our behaviors because we are giving substandard care,\u201d 40-year nursing veteran Rebecca Wall told the Examiner.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s offensive to be told if you don\u2019t do this course, you\u2019re out after 40 years,\u201d she added. \u201cA whole career spent in the field because you don\u2019t agree to the one dogma: you\u2019re done, you\u2019re valueless, you\u2019re not worth it anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the board of nursing, \u201cimplicit bias\u201d training is required for nurses by a committee of the Kentucky General Assembly and \u201cfailure to do it could result in a civil sanction or discipline.\u201d<\/p>\n

Laura Morgan, a program manager at Do No Harm, an organization devoted<\/a> to protecting \u201chealthcare from a radical, divisive, and discriminatory ideology,\u201d said that some of the woke concepts manifesting at the state level were trickling down from the national American Nurses Association. She said that former ANA President Ernest Grant started moving the organization to the Left following the riots after the death of George Floyd.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe started taking the ANA on a sharp left turn,\u201d she said, referencing a \u201cracial reckoning\u201d statement from the ANA that \u201ctalks about all the permanent harm nurses have done throughout the years to their patients.\u201d<\/p>\n
