Pentagon says it\u00a0plans to send additional fighter jets and naval assets to the Persian Gulf region to increase US military presence in the region,\u00a0a move that comes against the backdrop of Iran\u2019s stern warning. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Addressing a briefing<\/a> on Monday, Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh claimed the deployment would be an effort to counter Iran, citing a number of \u201calarming\u201d events in the Strait of Hormuz earlier this month.<\/p>\n

On July 10, an Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) commander announced that the US made \u201cunprofessional and risky\u201d attempts to impede the seizure of a foreign oil tanker smuggling Iranian fuel in the Persian Gulf last week, but the IRGC successfully confiscated the vessel.<\/p>\n

According to IRGC\u2019s Rear Admiral Ramazan Zir-Rahi, the vessel carrying contraband fuel had arranged military backing from US military forces in the area but was still seized by Iran\u2019s naval forces.<\/p>\n

He further elaborated that the US Navy attempted to intervene as IRGC naval forces moved in to intercept the oil tanker involved in smuggling one million liters of Iranian oil and gas.<\/p>\n

Singh, however, alleged that Iran is conducting destabilizing activities that \u201cthreaten the free flow of commerce\u201d through the strategic Strait of Hormuz \u201cof which the world depends on for more than one-fifth of the world\u2019s oil supply.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Secretary of Defense has ordered the deployment of the destroyer USS Thomas Hudner, F-35 fighters and F-16 fighters to \u2026 defend US interests and safeguard freedom of navigation in the region,\u201d she told reporters.<\/p>\n

She did not give details about the date the fighter jets and guided-missile destroyer would be sent to the region, or how long the new deployment would last but emphasized that the move would help to monitor and secure \u201cvital waterways.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Friday, an unnamed senior American defense official also said the US will send F-16 fighter jets to the Persian Gulf region this weekend in a bid to \u201cprotect ships\u201d from \u201cIranian seizures.\u201d<\/p>\n

The official claimed that the F-16s will give air cover to the ships moving through the strategic Strait of Hormuz and increase the US military\u2019s visibility in the area, the Associated Press reported.<\/p>\n

Iran says it views US military vessels lurking in the waters of the Persian Gulf as a threat to its security and a source of tensions and instability in the region.<\/p>\n

On Monday, Iran\u2019s Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kan\u2019ani warned the United States to refrain from any \u201cprovocative\u201d moves in the region, especially close to the country\u2019s borders.<\/p>\n

The spokesman further said that Tehran reserves the right to take \u201cdeterrent measures\u201d under international law.<\/p>\n

\u201cIran monitors with sensitivity and accuracy any illegal and unconstructive act that affects the security of the region, and it will \u2026 pay special attention to any provocative and illegal moves, especially near its borders,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Kan\u2019ani said the US government\u2019s role regarding the issue of regional security has never been peaceful and constructive.<\/p>\n

Over the past years, the US navy has several times seized Iranian-controlled tankers and shipments of oil en route to other countries, citing its own sanctions on Iran\u2019s oil exports.<\/p>\n
