However, simply put, the Ukrainian counteroffensive has made little headway and taken heavy casualties in doing so.

This is in stark contrast to just over a year ago when The Guardian was actually toying with the idea of a Ukrainian Victory:

Ukraine is already winning: victory can be achieved without risking nuclear war
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/may/05/ukraine-already-winning-victory-without-risking-nuclear-war

The Guardian wasn’t the only Western media outlet to indulge in such speculation. The Daily Telegraph was also hailing Ukraine’s supposed victories over Russia:

Kharkiv is beginning to look like Ukraine’s second major victory over Russia
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2022/05/15/kharkiv-beginning-look-like-ukraines-second-major-victory-russia/

Wrecked Ukrainian armoured vehicles. Click to enlarge

Now little more than 12 months later and the situation on the ground has changed dramatically. In that time the Ukrainians have lost more than 100,000 men, some estimate as many as 150,000 of their best-trained professional soldiers.

During the same period the Ukrainian Army also sustained 100,000 to 250,000 wounded, and not lightly wounded either. We are talking about limbs lost and minds severely traumatized.

That’s why Ukraine prohibited all men 18-60 from leaving the country and why a general mobilization order was issued. They might not be up to the standard of the professional front line soldiers they replaced but the new conscripts will fill in the gaps of those who have been killed or wounded. For now that’s the best Ukraine can do and so they are, essentially, just cannon fodder.

While it’s true that the Ukrainian Army also received many top Western tanks and armoured vehicles in the run up to the counteroffensive, in the past few days they’ve lost quite a few them too.

So on balance it looks like the Ukrainian counteroffensive has made little progress and the Western media is now trying to put a brave face on what may turn out to be a military debacle. In addition, Russian forces have had success bogging down Ukrainian armor with missile attacks and mines and have been deploying air power more effectively.

Ukrainian forces are proving “vulnerable” to minefields and Russian forces “competent” in their defense, one of the Western officials said.

The officials cautioned that the counteroffensive is still in its early stages – and that the US and its allies “remain optimistic” Ukrainian forces will be able to make territorial gains over time. The US and its allies are likely to wait until at least July for a fuller assessment of the progress of the counteroffensive which was gradually launched over the last few weeks and is seen as crucial to determining who ultimately wins the war which was launched when Russia invaded last year.

In addition, these officials note that Ukrainian forces have themselves been adapting to Russian tactics and defenses, including carrying out more dismounted operations. In recent days, Ukrainian forces have also had more success targeting and shooting down Russian aircraft.

Ultimately, the counteroffensive is proving a “tough drive” for Ukraine and Russia, one of the Western official said, with both sides incurring heavy losses.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky admitted Wednesday that progress had been “slower than desired.”

“We would definitely like to make bigger steps,” Zelensky acknowledged in a BBC interview. “But nevertheless, those who fight shall win and to those that knock, the door shall be opened.”

Well in advance of the counteroffensive, Western officials cautioned that forces defending territory always maintain significant advantages, especially given the weeks Russian forces have had to dig in and fortify their defensive lines.

Several officials told CNN that adverse weather was proving an issue for Ukrainian forces.

“The weather has been playing havoc with the offensive schedule as vehicles have struggled with trafficability. Ukrainian casualties are heavy, though not as bad as the Russia’s are trying to portray,” one of the officials said.

After a meeting of the Defense Contact Group in Brussels last week, the top US general said Ukraine is making “steady progress” but warned they had to be in for the long haul.

“This is a very difficult fight, it is a very violent fight and It will likely take a considerable amount of time and at high cost,” Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen.
