{"id":268338,"date":"2023-05-02T07:04:20","date_gmt":"2023-05-02T07:04:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/?p=268338"},"modified":"2023-05-03T07:13:04","modified_gmt":"2023-05-03T07:13:04","slug":"oral-sex-is-fueling-an-epidemic-of-throat-cancers-in-the-us-and-uk-doctor-claims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/?p=268338","title":{"rendered":"Oral sex is fueling an &#8216;epidemic&#8217; of throat cancers in the US and UK, doctor claims"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>Dr Hisham Mehanna warned people with more sexual partners were at risk<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>This was because they were more likely to catch HPV, which can cause cancer<\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Luke Andrews \u2013 Daily Mail April 26, 2023<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>The US and UK are suffering a throat <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.fo\/o\/PPlq8\/https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/cancer\/index.html\"><strong>cancer<\/strong><\/a> &#8216;epidemic&#8217; \u2014 and experts point to oral sex as the culprit.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Hisham Mehanna, from the UK&#8217;s University of <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.fo\/o\/PPlq8\/https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/birmingham\/index.html\"><strong>Birmingham<\/strong><\/a>, said 70 percent of cases of throat cancer are caused by\u00a0human papillomavirus (<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.fo\/o\/PPlq8\/https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/hpv\/index.html\"><strong>HPV<\/strong><\/a>), a normally harmless virus that is spread sexually and has been linked to multiple forms of cancers.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Mehanna said people with multiple oral sex partners have an up to nine-fold increased risk of throat cancer.<\/p>\n<p>There is a vaccine for HPV, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.fo\/o\/PPlq8\/https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/health\/article-11990473\/Shockingly-high-number-Americans-dont-realize-common-STD-cause-cancer.html\"><strong>but only 54 percent of Americans<\/strong><\/a> have received it \u2014 far below the 80 percent figure believed to be a threshold for population safety.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Mehanna wrote in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.fo\/o\/PPlq8\/https:\/\/theconversation.com\/us\"><strong>The Conversation<\/strong><\/a>: &#8216;Over the past two decades, there has been a rapid increase in throat cancer in the west, to the extent that some have called it an epidemic.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;This has been due to a large rise in a specific type of throat cancer called oropharyngeal cancer.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Oropharyngeal cancer is the most common type of throat cancer. It appears in the tonsils and back of the throat.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors consider HPV infection to be the biggest risk factor for developing the disease.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Mehanna continued: &#8216;HPV is sexually transmitted.
