Introduction \u2013 April 25, 2023<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Quietly and with little fanfare Russia has embarked on a massive expansion of its armed forces.<\/p>\n

Earlier in March it launched a recruitment campaign with the aim of enrolling 400,000 volunteers<\/a>. However, this was not to replace \u201cheavy losses\u201d in Ukraine, as some in the Western mainstream media have suggested.<\/p>\n

As respected commentators like former UN Weapons Inspector and US Marine Intelligence officer Scott Ritter, and retired U.S. Army colonel and military consultant Douglas Macgregor have pointed out, Russian casualties in Ukraine have been a fraction of the 43,000 claimed by the US Defense Intelligence Agency<\/a>.<\/p>\n

To add to the allure of signing up, the new recruits will earn a minimum of 160,000 roubles ($2,700) a month, which is almost THREE TIMES THE NATIONAL AVERAGE<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Moreover, the 400,000 volunteers will be in addition to 500,000 new conscripts who are being called up under tightened draft legislation<\/a>. That makes a combined total of 900,000 in addition to Russia\u2019s current army of 830,000.<\/p>\n

Meaning that Moscow intends to MORE THAN DOUBLE the size of its army by the end of the year!!<\/p>\n

To put that into perspective: the British Army currently fields 112,000 soldiers. So Russia will expand its ground forces by a factor of EIGHT TIMES the size of the British Army!!<\/p>\n

We are not talking about an incremental increase but a massive expansion of Russia\u2019s army, which leads this writer to suspect that something far bigger may be in the works.<\/p>\n

Why else would Moscow embark on such a massive expansion of its army if it weren\u2019t preparing for a much bigger conflict?<\/p>\n

Regardless of who is right or wrong, we need to understand that the war in Ukraine could be about to escalate dramatically and irrevocably. Ed.<\/p>\n

Russia has tightened its conscription law before a widely anticipated Ukrainian counteroffensive in the coming weeks, including introducing electronic military draft papers.<\/p>\n

The lower and upper houses of parliament rushed through legislation that will make it significantly harder for Russians to dodge the draft while automatically banning registered conscripts from leaving the country.<\/p>\n

The changes were pushed through with little public debate, fuelling speculation that Russia plans to announce a second wave of mobilisation, something the Kremlin has repeatedly denied.<\/p>\n

The Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said the changes were intended to improve the military registration system and \u201chave nothing to do with mobilisation\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen the special military operation began, you and I saw that in some places we had a lot of mess in the military recruitment offices,\u201d Peskov told journalists on Wednesday. \u201cThat is exactly the purpose of this legislative initiative: to clear up this mess and to make it [the system] modern, effective and convenient for citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n
