Kaliningrad is a Russian exclave located between Poland and Lithuania on the Baltic coast, which also <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/kaliningrad-russias-unsinkable-aircraft-carrier-deep-in-nato-territory-182541\">hosts <\/a>a crucial military air base for Moscow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter identification, it turned out to be three aircraft: A Russian IL-20M Coot-A that was escorted by two Su-27 Flankers. The Dutch F-35s escorted the formation from a distance and handed over the escort to NATO partners,\u201d the Dutch ministry\u2019s statement added.<\/p>\n<p>The Il-20M Coot-A is NATO\u2019s reporting name for the Russian Ilyushin Il-20M reconnaissance aircraft while the Su-27 Flankers are NATO\u2019s reporting name for the Sukhoi Su-28 fighter aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDutch F-35 stationed at the 22nd Tactical Air Base in Malbork were scrambled on Monday in order to identify and intercept three Russian aircraft that were operating near Polish airspace,\u201d the Polish defense ministry told POLITICO, adding that the fighters were operating over international waters and \u201cnone of airspace has been interrupted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The incident comes just days after tensions heightened between Russia and NATO amid the Kremlin\u2019s war on Ukraine, after a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/kyiv-ukraine-offensive-russia-launch-missile-raids-troops-near-kupyansk\/\">Russian missile<\/a> came close to entering NATO member Romania\u2019s airspace.<\/p>\n<p>Russia\u2019s defense ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>The Netherlands\u2019 defense ministry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/aerospace-defense\/dutch-f-35s-intercept-three-russian-military-aircraft-over-poland-netherlands-2023-02-13\/\">said <\/a>that eight Dutch F-35s are stationed in Poland for February and March.
