Britain plans to send 600 Brimstone missiles to Ukraine to support the country in its fight against Russia, Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said on Thursday.<\/p>\n

Wallace was meeting with other defence ministers at the Tapa army base in Estonia.<\/p>\n

He outlined a previously-announced package of military support for Ukraine, including sending Challenger tanks<\/a>, and added detail on the types of missiles Britain would supply.<\/p>\n

“I can say we’re also going to send another 600 Brimstone missiles into theatre which will be incredibly important in helping Ukraine dominate the battlefield,” he said.<\/p>\n

Wallace also said Western unity against Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion remained strong and that allies were “in it for the long haul”.<\/p>\n

“If President Putin is banking on us getting bored this year, he’s wrong. We will plan for this year and next year and the year after and beyond,” he said.<\/p>\n

Russia is warning of an \u201cextremely dangerous\u201d escalation if NATO deploys heavy weapons such as battle tanks and long-range missile systems to Ukraine.<\/p>\n

The cautionary statement from the Kremlin on Thursday came before a key donor meeting as Western countries consider sending more powerful military equipment to Ukraine with Russian forces intensifying attacks<\/a> to secure territory.<\/p>\n

Germany, in particular, has faced mounting pressure to supply tanks<\/a> to Kyiv and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has aired frustration about not obtaining enough heavy weaponry.<\/p>\n

Since the United Kingdom announced last week it will send Challenger 2 tanks, Berlin has faced increasing pressure to supply its Leopard 2 tanks or at least clear the way for others, such as Poland, to deliver the German-made equipment from their own stock.<\/p>\n

The Kremlin pressed the West not to give Ukraine heavy weapons capable of striking Russian forces and territory.<\/p>\n

\u201cPotentially, this is extremely dangerous. It will mean bringing the conflict to a whole new level which, of course, will not bode well from the point of view of global and pan-European security,\u201d Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters.<\/p>\n

\u2018We will destroy it\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n

On Friday, the United States will gather its allies at its airbase in Ramstein, Germany for a new round of talks on backing Ukraine militarily.<\/p>\n

US defence chief Lloyd\u00a0Austin will host the coordination meeting. He said \u201cwe\u2019ll renew our united commitment to support Ukraine\u2019s self-defence for the long haul\u201d \u2013 but did not mention specific new equipment.<\/p>\n

Western partners fear Ukraine could use long-range weapons to hit deep inside Russian territory or Crimea \u2013 a peninsula Moscow annexed in 2014 \u2013 despite Kyiv promising it would not do so.<\/p>\n

Peskov spoke after Moscow\u2019s ambassador to the US, Anatoly Antonov, said Russia would retaliate if Ukraine uses Western-supplied weapons to target Russia or the Crimea Peninsula.<\/p>\n
