Through 2022, parents across the country have fought to have books deemed \u201cage inappropriate\u201d and \u201cpornographic\u201d removed from schools.<\/p>\n

Across 5,000 schools, more than 1,600 book titles were removed in the 2021-2022 school year, according<\/a> to NBC News. The books most commonly removed from schools, including \u201cGender Queer: A Memoir<\/a>\u201d and \u201cAll Boys Aren\u2019t Blue,<\/a>\u201d contain images of masturbation and explicit descriptions of sexual encounters. \u201cParents across the country have organically risen to fight the obviously age-inappropriate material that has crept into public schools,\u201d Brooke Stephens, a member of Utah Parents United<\/a>, a group focused on parental rights in education, told the Daily Caller News Foundation. \u201cOnce they see it, they know it\u2019s wrong and they won\u2019t give up until it\u2019s gone.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGender Queer\u201d the most<\/a> challenged book in schools, is about a character with \u201ce\/em\/eir\u201d pronouns navigating being queer. The book<\/a> contains cartoon images of a boy masturbating and performing oral sex on another man.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll Boys Aren\u2019t Blue<\/a>,\u201d a memoir about the experience of a black queer<\/a> boy growing up, does not contain graphic images but describes graphic sexual encounters.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe reached his hand down and pulled out my dick,\u201d \u201cAll Boys Aren\u2019t Blue\u201d states<\/a>. \u201cHe quickly went to giving me head. I just sat back and enjoyed it as I could tell he was, too.\u201d<\/p>\n

School districts in Missouri have removed more than 300 books from school libraries to follow a state law that prohibits sexually explicit content from the classroom, according<\/a> Education Week. In Utah, about 280 book complaints were filed<\/a> in nine of the state\u2019s 41 school districts since May.<\/p>\n

Alpine School District, Utah\u2019s largest school district, removed 52 books for \u201cinappropriate content\u201d including \u201cGender Queer\u201d and \u201cAll Boys Aren\u2019t Blue.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other books removed<\/a> from school<\/a> districts for their sexually explicit content included \u201cThis Book Is Gay<\/a>,\u201d a book that has been described as a \u201chow to\u201d guide for the LGBTQ community. The book<\/a> offers tips on anal sex, hand jobs and suggests dating apps to find LGBTQ partners.<\/p>\n

\u201cA GOOD HANDIE is all about the wrist action. Rub the head of his cock back and forth with your hand,\u201d \u201cThis Book Is Gay\u201d stated. \u201cTry different speeds and pressures until he responds positively.\u201d<\/p>\n

The book \u201cFlamer<\/a>,\u201d a story about a gay boy, has also been challenged<\/a> in several school districts as it explicitly describes<\/a> sexual interactions.<\/p>\n

Books such as \u201cGender Queer\u201d are being removed because they are being deemed obscene, which is different from being considered \u201csexually explicit,\u201d PEN America, an organization working to keep books in schools, stated on their website<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe term \u2018obscenity\u2019 is being stretched in unrecognizable ways because the concept itself is widely accepted as grounds for limiting access to content,\u201d PEN America stated. \u201cBut many of the materials now being removed under the guise of obscenity bear no relation to the sexually explicit, deliberately evocative content that the term has historically connoted.\u201d<\/p>\n
