The Minsk accords were signed to “give Ukraine time” to strengthen itself, according to ex-German Chancellor Angela Merkel<\/a>, who was in office from 2005 to 2021, in an interview published on Wednesday in the Zeit <\/em>newspaper.<\/p>\n

Merkel said “The 2014 Minsk agreement was an attempt to give time to Ukraine. It also used this time to become stronger as can be seen today. The Ukraine of 2014-2015 is not the modern Ukraine.”<\/p>\n

According to her, “it was clear to everyone” that the conflict had been put on hold, noting that the issue had not been settled, “yet this was what gave Ukraine invaluable time.”<\/p>\n

She voiced doubt that NATO states could not have supported Kiev to the level that they do today at the time.<\/p>\n

Merkel was the German chancellor<\/a> when Ukraine’s state coup happened in 2014, and the Minsk accords on resolving the Donbass war were signed with her contribution.<\/p>\n

Previously, in an interview with German magazine Der Spiegel<\/em>, Merkel discussed her final encounters with Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying that during the ex-Chancellor’s farewell visit to Moscow in August 2021 she felt \u201cin terms of power politics, you\u2019re done,\u201d adding that \u201cfor Putin, only power counts.\u201d<\/p>\n

She further explained that the fact that Putin brought Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov along with him to this final visit made it clear to Merkel that her power has crumbled, given the fact that in the past their meetings were \u201coften in private.\u201d<\/p>\n

A confession by former German chancellor Angela Merkel about the Minsk peace agreements could be used as evidence in a tribunal involving Western politicians responsible for provoking the Ukraine conflict between Moscow and Kiev, the Russian Foreign Ministry warned on Thursday.<\/p>\n

The deal, brokered by Germany and France, was supposed to be a roadmap for peace in the war-torn country. Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that his country’s current military offensive was prompted by the failure to implement the terms of the accords.<\/p>\n

The former German leader admitted in an interview with Die Zeit on Wednesday that the actual purpose of the Minsk agreements was to give Ukraine time to prepare for a military confrontation with Russia.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey talk a lot about legal assessments of what is happening around Ukraine, certain tribunals and so on in all sorts of ways,\u201d<\/em> Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said during a media briefing on Thursday. \u201cBut this is a specific reason for a tribunal.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

She claimed that Merkel\u2019s comments were nothing short of the testimony of a person who had openly admitted that everything done between 2014 and 2015 was meant to \u201cdistract the international community from real issues, play for time, pump up the Kiev regime with weapons, and escalate the issue into a large-scale conflict,\u201d<\/em> Zakharova added.<\/p>\n

She said Merkel\u2019s statements \u201chorrifyingly\u201d<\/em> reveal that the West uses \u201cforgery as a method of action,\u201d<\/em> and resorts to \u201cmachinations, manipulation and all kinds of distortions of truth, law and rights imaginable.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The spokeswoman claimed that the West had known well in 2015, when it spent hours negotiating the second part of the Minsk accords, that it would never even attempt to fulfill any part of the agreements and would instead pump weapons into Kiev.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey did not feel sorry for anyone: women, children, the civilian population of Donbass or the whole of Ukraine. They needed a conflict and they were ready for it back then, in 2015,\u201d<\/em> Zakharova said.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, a number of Western officials called for the creation of a special UN-backed court to investigate alleged war crimes committed by Russia during its ongoing military campaign in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

The Kremlin has said the West has no legal or moral right to set up any courts to investigate or prosecute Russia over the conflict, which Moscow claims was ultimately provoked by the US and its allies.<\/p>\n
