Check out the lede to this Times <\/em>piece about the CCP\u2019s swift crackdown on the \u201cchatter\u201d over those two banners posted on the Sitong Bridge. According to the Times <\/em>reporters, the \u201ccolumn of smoke\u201d above the overpass \u201cdrew attention to [the] protester\u201d who\u2019d hung the banners that caused all the online fuss, which China\u2019s \u201cInternet censors\u201d then rushed to \u201cquell.\u201d<\/p>\n

China\u2019s Internet Censors Race to Quell Beijing Protest Chatter<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n

When a column of smoke appeared on Thursday over the Sitong Bridge overpass in the Haidian district of Beijing, <\/em>it drew attention to a protester who had hung banners openly bashing China\u2019s top leader by name and criticizing the country\u2019s \u201czero Covid\u201d policy, including one calling for \u201cfreedom and not lockdowns.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Not to be pedantic, but that \u201ccolumn of smoke\u201d did not <\/em>\u201cdraw attention to the protester,\u201d who was (of course) no longer there. What the smoke did <\/em>\u201cdraw attention to\u201d was those two banners <\/em>which said dissident had hung before s\/he fled the scene, being eager not <\/em>to \u201cdraw attention\u201d in the act.<\/p>\n

Since the Times <\/em>is, nowadays, a badly edited and, therefore, poorly written paper, that stupid lede was surely unintentional; although it does betray a certain odd unwillingness to focus on the content <\/em>of those banners, which, except for one wee snippet (\u201cfreedom and not lockdowns\u201d), the Gray Lady\u2019s minions failed to translate for her (ever-dwindling) Western readership.<\/p>\n

Here, then, is the translation that the Times <\/em>did not provide (but that a former student sent one of my colleagues):<\/p>\n

\u201cNo Covid test, we want to eat. No restrictions, we want freedom. No lies, we want dignity. No Cultural Revolution, we want reform. No leaders, we want votes. By not being slaves, we can be citizens.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Go on strike at school and work, remove dictator and national traitor Xi Jinping.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Why<\/em>, then, no full translation in the Times<\/em>? Did its editors consider one not \u201cfit to print\u201d because it doesn\u2019t really matter what <\/em>the protest said? Or did they decide that that full protest wasn\u2019t \u201cfit to print\u201d because it matters greatly, and not just to the Chinese people? After all, would not that first, and longer, protest resonate with millions in the world\u2019s \u201cdemocracies,\u201d who also want not to be slaves, but citizens, respected by their governments? Perhaps somebody at the Times <\/em>(or CIA) did not want that full protest sparking \u201cprotest chatter\u201d over here<\/em> (and elsewhere in the West)\u2014\u201cchatter\u201d which our<\/em> \u201cInternet censors\u201d would then have to \u201cquell.\u201d<\/p>\n

Was that full protest translated anywhere<\/em>? If so, please let us know. In any case, let\u2019s do our best to share it far and wide.<\/p>\n
