But one powerful weapon, called the Army Tactical Missile System, has become part of a debate about the limits of U.S. support for its ally.

The long-range missile — known as ATACMS and pronounced like “attack ’ems” — can strike targets 190 miles away with a warhead containing about 375 pounds of explosives. It can be fired from the HIMARS mobile launchers that the United States has provided Ukraine, as well as from older M270 launchers sent from Britain and Germany.

Ukrainian officials say the missile could help them regain Crimea, a part of the country that Russia seized in 2014. But Pentagon officials insist they are already giving Ukraine the weapons it most needs: Guided Multiple Launch Rocket Systems, or GMLRS.

And this week, a senior Pentagon official said that the guided rockets, which the United States has sent Ukrainian forces by the thousands, can reach most of their targets, even in Crimea.

Why has this weapon been such a sensitive issue?

It comes down to this: concern in the White House that Ukraine could use the long-range missile to strike targets deep inside Russia, and that President Vladimir V. Putin might respond by escalating the war, possibly by invading a neighboring NATO country.

“We’re trying to avoid World War III,” President Biden has said.

But President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine says the weapon is crucial to his country’s ability to launch a wider counteroffensive after its recent advances. He has also insisted that he has no plans to strike Russian cities or target civilians.

Continues …

Comment – Oct 7, 2022

In plain language America’s puppet president is talking crap. The Biden administration and their allies have committed themselves to fueling conflict within Russia and its neighbours. However, they cannot be open and upfront about this as it risks igniting a much wider conflict beyond Russia and its neighbours, and the Western public would naturally reject such a proposal.

So the Biden administration now has to inch toward such a conflict surreptitiously. That’s why Joe’s handlers have no doubt instructed him to say things like “we’re trying to avoid WWIII”, when if they are not too careful that’s exactly what could happen.

Under Putin Russia’s military has been transformed from an outdated post Soviet behemoth into a modern professional fighting force, that poses a potential obstacle for Western designs.

So right now America and its allies seem intent on fuelling a drawn-out bloody campaign right on Russia’s border. The objective seems to be to weaken Russia through such a conflict and thereby prevent it from challenging the West’s overall plan for continued global domination.

To this end a drawn out bloody conflict in the newly declared Russian republics in former eastern Ukraine, and further east in Crimea, would be ideal. A full blown military confrontation between Russia and the West would not be fit for purpose however, as Russia might even come out victorious.

So for the time being at least, we can expect the West to keep providing arms and support to Ukraine for it to continue fighting. As the saying goes: Washington (and London) are ready to fight Russia to the last Ukrainian.

However, that also means that the West won’t provide the weapons necessary for Ukraine to strike too deeply into Russia.

That might provoke Russia too much and then it might turn its attention on those arming Ukraine, and that’s the last thing the West wants. Nonetheless, that could change in the coming weeks, if Putin decides to deal with the root cause of Russia’s problem with Ukraine.

If that happens, he might opt to strike deeper into Western Europe and then a much wider conflict might ensue. We will know in the coming weeks. Ed.

Ukraine wants missile with sufficient range to strike Crimea.
