This is just the latest in a slew of disturbing news coming from the clinic related to transitioning extremely young children.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, several promotional videos created by Boston Children\u2019s Hospital went viral on Twitter. The first clip to be widely shared racked up over 1.6 million views and featured Gender Multispeciality Service (GeMS) clinician Dr. Frances Grimstad presenting hysterectomies as a form of \u201cgender-affirming\u201d therapy.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Boston Children\u2019s Hospital (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BostonChildrens?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@BostonChildrens<\/a>) is now offering \u201cgender affirming hysterectomies\u201d for young girls <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/JOH5fFtGJ0\">pic.twitter.com\/JOH5fFtGJ0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Libs of TikTok (@libsoftiktok) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/libsoftiktok\/status\/1557775959217950725?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 11, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Another <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/libsoftiktok\/status\/1557775959217950725\">video from the Hospital that sparked massive backlash<\/a> featured Dr. Jeremi Carswell, the Director of the GeMS clinic, stating that children can \u201cknow that they are transgender from the moment they have any ability to express themselves,\u201d and \u201cparents tell us\u2026 they knew from the minute they were born.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many concerned commenters expressed disbelief at views espoused by medical professionals in the videos. But Boston Children\u2019s Hospital played a crucial role in pioneering the use of drugs to halt children\u2019s puberty in North America.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Norman Spack, a pediatric endocrinologist, co-founded the hospital\u2019s Gender Multispeciality Service (formerly the Gender Management Service) in February 2007.<\/p>\n<p>In a TED Talk lecture he gave in 2013, Dr. Spack talks of halting children\u2019s puberty beginning as early as 10 years old.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the time that puberty begins, about age 10 to 12 in girls and 12 to 14 in boys\u2026 the child who says they are in the wrong body is almost certain to be transgender and is extremely unlikely to change those feelings no matter how anybody tries,\u201d Dr. Spack said, while defending the practice of halting children\u2019s puberty.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Spack described a program he called \u201c12-16-18,\u201d which refers to the ages at which children should enter various stages of medical transition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAround age 12 is when they give the blocking hormones,\u201d Dr. Spack says, referring to clinicians in the Netherlands. He stated that cross-sex hormones could be administered beginning from 15 to 16 years of age, preparing a teen for genital surgery by the age of 18.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Spack went on to advocate for the necessity of prescribing puberty blockers and estrogen to young boys so that they can grow up to be \u201cbeautiful,\u201d highlighting two instances in which he had done so. Dr. Spack tells of meeting \u201cJackie,\u201d a 12-year-old male child from Britain, and placing him on estrogen by 13 years old.<\/p>\n<p>Jackie\u2019s mother, Susie Green, had sought out medical intervention for her child in the United States because it was illegal to do so for minors under the age of 16 in the United Kingdom. Incidentally, Susie Green has since <a href=\"https:\/\/reduxx.info\/mermaids-must-fall-next-is-uk-trans-charity-mermaids-to-blame-for-tavistock\/\">become a prominent advocate<\/a> for transitioning children in the UK, and currently serves as the CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/reduxx.info\/mermaids-must-fall-next-is-uk-trans-charity-mermaids-to-blame-for-tavistock\/\">controversial trans charity Mermaids<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>During his TED Talk, Dr. Spack explained that in order to prevent Jackie\u2019s growth, he decided to block the boy\u2019s puberty and administer estrogen to Jackie beginning at age 13.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe blocked [his] testosterone with a blocking hormone. But we added estrogen not at 16, but at 13,\u201d Dr. Spack said. He then emphasizes that Jackie underwent \u201cgenital plastic surgery\u201d in Thailand when he was 16 years old, again due to the illegality of the procedure for minors in the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>During the TED Talk, Dr. Spack also notes another one of his young patients, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-2073416\/The-incredible-story-identical-twin-boys-14-lives-girl-hormone-therapy-transgender.html\">Nicole Maines<\/a>, who he placed on puberty-blocking drugs at the age of 11. Maines then started <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nicoleamaines\/status\/1259321035381506048\">estrogen at 14<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to providing cross-sex hormones to young boys, Dr. Spack has taken credit for pioneering the medical practice of halting puberty in children in the United States. Speaking on halting the natural development of children aged 10 to 14 years old, Dr. Spack said, \u201cI brought some kids in\u2026 and this now became the standard of care, and [Boston] Children\u2019s Hospital was behind it. We started a program in 2007. It became the first program of its kind in North America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This claim is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/speakers\/norman_spack\">reiterated on the TED website<\/a>, which, in a biography detailing Dr. Spack\u2019s work, asserts that Boston Children\u2019s Hospital \u201cremains one of the few in the world that treats minors with hormone replacement therapy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2015, Dr. Spack wrote an op-ed for <em>The New York Times<\/em> titled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/roomfordebate\/2015\/06\/18\/is-there-a-right-age-to-change-ones-sex\/transgender-surgery-at-17-may-avoid-serious-problems-later\">Transgender Surgery at 17 May Avoid Serious Problems\u00a0Later<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGenetic boys could have surgery at 17, especially if they are going to college, since the months of necessary post-operative care are best done at home. If genetic girls who identify as male have very large breasts, mastectomies could even be done at 14,\u201d wrote Dr. Spack. He has also separately asserted that children as young as 2 years of age can understand their gender identity.<\/p>\n<p>Boston Children\u2019s Hospital recently pulled videos which appeared to promote the surgical transitioning of teens and children in response to intense criticism which followed public awareness of their services.<\/p>\n<p>The fact-checkers at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/factchecks\/2022\/aug\/12\/tweets\/no-boston-childrens-hospital-doesnt-provide-hyster\/?utm_medium=Social&amp;utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1660343179\">Politifact<\/a><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/factchecks\/2022\/aug\/12\/tweets\/no-boston-childrens-hospital-doesnt-provide-hyster\/?utm_medium=Social&amp;utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1660343179\"> asserted<\/a> that it was \u201cinaccurate\u201d to suggest that Boston Children\u2019s Hospital had endorsed or performed so-called sex reassignment surgeries on minors. In the same article, <em>Politifact<\/em> points out that Boston Children\u2019s Hospital follows the Standards of Care (SOC) recommended by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH).<\/p>\n<p>WPATH is expected to release the newest version of its SOC later on this year. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/nbc-out\/out-health-and-wellness\/trans-kids-advocates-blame-culture-war-debate-adolescent-health-care-rcna33679\">Among updated recommendations<\/a> are the lowering of the minimum recommended age that providers can prescribe hormone therapy to 14, down from 16. The association will also lower the minimum recommended age for some surgeries to 15, down from 18.<\/p>\n<p>Boston Children\u2019s Hospital had, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PolitiFact\/status\/1558290965449920512?s=20\">according to their website<\/a>, already been recommending genital surgeries for teens aged 17, but quietly updated the medical standards following intense scrutiny.<\/p>\n<p>An academic article published in March of this year further corroborates evidence that Boston Children\u2019s Hospital has performed genital surgeries on under-18\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA Single Center Case Series of Gender-Affirming Surgeries and the Evolution of a Specialty Anesthesia Team,\u201d published by the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/35407551\/\">Journal of Clinical Medicine<\/a><\/em>, states that \u201cthere is growing support for improved access to gender-affirming surgical care at pediatric institutions,\u201d and specifically names Boston Children\u2019s Hospital as one of the providers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Center for Gender Surgery (CfGS) at Boston Children\u2019s Hospital (BCH) was the first pediatric center in the United States to offer gender-affirming chest surgeries for individuals over 15 years old and genital surgeries for those over 17 years of age,\u201d reads the paper. \u201cIn the four years since its inception, CfGS has completed over 300 gender-affirming surgeries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mainstream media outlets have decried claims that the hospital is medically transitioning minors as \u201cfalse allegations.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/tech\/internet\/boston-childrens-hospital-warns-employees-far-right-online-harassment-rcna43376\"><em>NBC News<\/em> reported<\/a> of \u201cmounting threats\u201d to hospital employees while blaming \u201cfar-right activists\u201d for spreading \u201canti-trans statements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In response to the backlash, the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BostonChildrens\/status\/1559646594991116289?t=6R2nrnbJOEfuVw_27VLxXg&amp;s=19\">Boston Children\u2019s Hospital<\/a> released a statement asserting the criticism was
