Click to enlarge<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/nhs\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">NHS<\/a> is shutting down its gender identity clinic for children at the Tavistock and Portman NHS foundation trust.<\/p>\n<p>The contract for the gender identity service at the trust would be brought to a close, the NHS said.<\/p>\n<p>It said it intended to build a \u201cmore resilient service\u201d by expanding provision, and would establish two services led by specialist children\u2019s hospitals in London and north-west <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/england\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">England<\/a>. The NHS said it aimed for these to be fully up and running by spring 2023.<\/p>\n<p>It follows <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2022\/mar\/10\/nhs-gender-identity-service-for-children-cant-cope-with-demand-review-finds\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">recommendations<\/a> from Dr Hilary Cass, who is leading an independent review of gender identity services for children and young people.<\/p>\n<p>She said there was a need to move away from a model of a sole provider, and instead establish regional services to better meet patients\u2019 needs.<\/p>\n<p>Her interim report found the rise in referrals to the gender identity development service (Gids) at the Tavistock and Portman NHS foundation trust in London had resulted in overwhelmed staff and waiting lists of up to two years.<\/p>\n<p>Cass said this was leaving young people \u201cat considerable risk\u201d of distress and deteriorating mental health.
