America is to station thousands more troops in Europe as a new Iron Curtain is drawn to deter Vladimir Putin after his brutal invasion of Ukraine<\/a>.<\/p>\n

At least 100,000 soldiers will maintain a presence \u2018for the foreseeable future\u2019 in countries near Russia<\/a>\u2019s border. They include Romania, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, where a new base will built for US Fifth Army Corps.<\/p>\n

Two more F-35 fighter squadrons will be sent to the UK with additional air defence systems built in Germany and Italy. Two more destroyers will be stationed in Spain, making a total of six.<\/p>\n

At a Nato summit in Madrid, US president Joe Biden<\/a> said: \u2018In a moment where Putin has shattered peace in Europe and attacked the very tenets of rule-based order, the US and our allies, we\u2019re going to step up, proving Nato is more needed now than it ever has been.<\/p>\n

\u2018Together with our allies, we\u2019re going to make sure that Nato is ready to meet the threats from all directions across every domain.\u2019<\/p>\n

The announcement came as the defence alliance formally invited Finland and Sweden to join after Turkey dropped its opposition. The offer prompted fury from Moscow, which called the expansion \u2018destabilising\u2019 for Europe.<\/p>\n

The additional military might is a reminder of the so-called Iron Curtain separating Russia from the West after World War II until the 1990s.<\/p>\n

Polish deputy foreign minister Marcin Przydacz said: \u2018Something that seemed impossible to many is becoming a fact today. We have a permanent US presence in Poland. It is also a clear signal to Moscow.\u2019<\/p>\n

But the pledges fell short of some leaders\u2019 demands, particularly Baltic states Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania which wanted a new garrison of 50,000. Instead, Nato forces there will increase slightly from 7,700 in March to 9,900.<\/p>\n

Mr Biden did not say how many additional US troops would be sent as part of \u2018enhanced\u2019 rotations in the countries.<\/p>\n

And Ukraine<\/a> president Volodymyr Zelensky<\/a> questioned why the expansion did not include his country.<\/p>\n

\u2018The open-door policy of Nato shouldn\u2019t resemble old turnstiles on Kyiv\u2019s subway, which stay open but close when you approach them until you pay,\u2019 he told leaders on a video link.<\/p>\n

\u2018Hasn\u2019t Ukraine paid enough? Hasn\u2019t our contribution to defending Europe and the entire civilisation been sufficient?\u2019<\/p>\n

He warned them his country needed \u00a34 billion per month plus more weapons right now, adding: \u2018This is not a war being waged by Russia against only Ukraine. This is a war for the right to dictate conditions in Europe \u2013 for what the future world order will be like.\u2019<\/p>\n

Nato called Russia \u2013 once a strategic partner \u2013 the \u2018most significant and direct threat to the allies\u2019 security and stability\u2019.<\/p>\n

Secretary general Jens Stoltenberg insisted Ukraine could rely on the alliance\u2019s help for as long as it takes.<\/p>\n

He said Nato would have 300,000 troops on high-readiness by 2023 \u2013 up from 40,000 \u2013 in \u2018the biggest overhaul of our collective defence since the end of the Cold War\u2019. The US deployment will increase its European force by 20,000.<\/p>\n

And he promised more \u2018robust in-place combat-ready forces\u2019 scaled up from battlegroups to brigades on its eastern flank, where the UK will also send 1,000 more troops to Estonia.<\/p>\n
