Click to enlarge<\/p><\/div>\n<p>About 8,000 British army troops will take part in exercises across eastern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/europe-news\">Europe<\/a> to combat Russian aggression in one of the largest deployments since the cold war.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of tanks will be deployed to countries ranging from Finland to North Macedonia this summer under plans that have been enhanced since Russia invaded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/ukraine\">Ukraine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Joining them will be tens of thousands of troops from Nato and the Joint Expeditionary Force alliance, which includes Finland and Sweden.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk\/ministry-of-defence\">Ministry of Defence<\/a> said the action had been long planned and had been enhanced in response to Russia\u2019s invasion of its neighbour in late February.<\/p>\n<p>Commander Field Army Lt Gen Ralph Wooddisse said: \u201cThe UK makes a significant contribution to the defence of Europe and the deterrence of Russian aggression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe British army\u2019s series of exercises is fundamental to both.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe scale of the deployment, coupled with the professionalism, training and agility of the British army, will deter aggression at a scale not seen in Europe this century.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The UK deployment is expected to build to a peak of about 8,000 personnel operating in mainland Europe between April and June.<\/p>\n<p>The defence secretary, Ben Wallace, said: \u201cThe security of Europe has never been more important.
