Google has launched an \u2018inclusive language\u2019 function designed to avoid the use of politically incorrect words.<\/p>\n

Users typing \u2018landlord\u2019 will see a warning that it \u2018may not be inclusive to all readers\u2019 with the suggestion they should try \u2018property owner\u2019 or \u2018proprietor\u2019 instead.<\/p>\n

The word \u2018humankind\u2019 is a suggested alternative to what the online giant apparently sees as the controversial term \u2018mankind\u2019.<\/p>\n

Gender specific terms such as \u2018policemen\u2019 or \u2018housewife\u2019 should also be replaced by \u2018police officers\u2019 and \u2018stay-at-home spouse\u2019, according to the new Google Document style programme. It is now being rolled out to what the firm calls enterprise-level users.<\/p>\n

Many computer document systems use methods to correct spelling and grammar.<\/p>\n

But nudging users towards woke language is being seen by critics as a step too far. Tests on the system have also thrown up major flaws.<\/p>\n

A transcribed interview with ex Klu Klux Klan leader David Duke, in which he uses offensive racial slurs and talks about hunting black people, prompted no warnings.<\/p>\n

But it suggested President John F Kennedy\u2019s inaugural address should say \u2018for all humankind\u2019 instead of \u2018for all mankind\u2019.<\/p>\n

Silkie Carlo, of campaign group Big Brother Watch, told the Sunday Telegraph<\/strong><\/a>: \u2018Google\u2019s new word warnings aren\u2019t assistive, they\u2019re deeply intrusive.<\/p>\n

\u2018This speech-policing is profoundly clumsy, creepy and wrong, often reinforcing bias.\u2019<\/p>\n

Sam Bowman, of online magazine Works in Progress, said: \u2018It feels pretty hectoring and adds an unwanted political\/cultural slant to what I\u2019d rather was a neutral product [as] a user.\u2019<\/p>\n

A Google spokesman said: \u2018Our technology is always improving, and we don\u2019t yet [have] a solution to identifying and mitigating all unwanted word associations and biases.\u2019<\/p>\n
