Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer Inc. is sponsoring journalism training programs utilized by Facebook to train its \u201cfact-checking\u201d partners and censor stories and posts critical of COVID-19 vaccines.<\/p>\n

The International Center For Journalists (ICFJ) \u2013 itself funded by the Open Society Foundations amongst others \u2013\u00a0is partnered with Meta, Facebook\u2019s parent company, on its \u201cJournalism Project\u201d initiative. In turn, Facebook relies on the journalists funded and trained by ICFJ to \u201ccombat<\/a> misinformation\u201d on its platform through its controversial<\/a> fact-checking operation.<\/p>\n

Together, Facebook and the ICFJ have funded<\/a> news outlets based in Africa<\/a>, Latin\u00a0America<\/a>, and the\u00a0Middle<\/a> East with a focus on COVID-19 reporting.<\/p>\n

Facebook\u2019s fact-checking partner ICFJ, however, also receives financial backing<\/a> from Pfizer, with its recently announced 2022 Arthur F. Burns Fellowship \u2013 named after a former Federal Reserve chairman \u2013 lists the pharmaceutical giant as one of the program\u2019s sponsors.<\/p>\n

\u201cICFJ\u2019s longest-running program, the Arthur F. Burns Fellowship provides talented young U.S., German and Canadian<\/a> journalists the opportunity to live and work in each other\u2019s country,\u201d explains a program summary. The program has produced dozens of alumni who \u201cnow work as foreign correspondents in 20 countries for well-known news outlets, such as The Washington Post, Reuters, CNN, ARD, Deutsche Welle and the S\u00fcddeutsche Zeitung,\u201d according<\/a> to the ICFJ.<\/p>\n

The financial relationship with Pfizer dates back to at least 2008, as the center partnered with the pharmaceutical firm on a \u201ctraining workshop on journalistic coverage of health issues\u201d across Latin America.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe objective of the workshop is to generate greater awareness about the importance of coverage of health issues in the region and to remember how the media can become leading actors when it comes to informing and educating the public about health issues. that directly affect your health and quality of life,\u201d explains a summary.<\/p>\n

The sole sponsor<\/a> of the workshop, which also addressed reporting on \u201ccardiovascular<\/a> diseases,\u201d was Pfizer.<\/p>\n

The unearthed financial ties between Pfizer and Facebook\u2019s fact-checking operation follow the pharmaceutical giant having additional conflicts of interest with news outlets including<\/a> Reuters.<\/p>\n
