The top editor of a Russian state-run media outlet who resigned in protest of President Vladimir Putin\u2019s invasion of Ukraine<\/a> last week is warning that the world could be in danger of a nuclear war.<\/p>\n

Maria Baronova, the editor-in-chief of RT, stepped down last week after publicly criticizing the invasion, telling her followers on the encrypted Telegram messaging service: \u201cOur granddads didn\u2019t fight for this.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Moscow-based journalist fears that the bloody invasion of Ukraine won\u2019t stop there.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe problem is, I know these people very well,\u201d Baronova told Fox News Digital<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey never send threats, they just kill, so there is kind of [a] weird silence around me, but I really think we\u2019re on the brink of a nuclear war right now<\/a>. I\u2019m not exaggerating.\u201d<\/p>\n

Journalists in Russia who publicly criticize government policy risk their safety, but the situation is so dire that Baronova was motivated to speak out, she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a son, I can\u2019t leave because his father won\u2019t allow me to leave with him, and so I just prefer to stay in Moscow \u2026 It seems like we\u2019re either in North Korea or we are going to be killed by a thermonuclear mushroom,\u201d Baronova told Fox News Digital.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wouldn\u2019t quit, and I wouldn\u2019t lose my salary and job if I was sure that we are going to be alive for many years, but I really don\u2019t know what is going to happen to all of us next.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the start of the invasion, Putin ordered that his country\u2019s nuclear weapons be prepared for heightened readiness<\/a> to launch because of what he described as \u201caggressive statements\u201d by Western adversaries.<\/p>\n

Baronova said she doesn\u2019t believe that Putin would resort to nuclear weapons. Instead, she fears that the Russian leader will goad the West into using<\/a> nonconventional arms against her country.<\/p>\n

\u201cI suspect the Western world will use it,\u201d Baronova\u00a0said. \u201cThis is a very dangerous situation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Baronova told Fox News Digital that she quit after a colleague at RT posted an Instagram message that read: \u201cIf you are now ashamed of being Russian, don\u2019t worry, you are not Russian.\u201d<\/p>\n

She said she was \u201creally disturbed\u201d by her colleagues\u2019 willingness to spread government propaganda.<\/p>\n

In response to the Instagram post, Baronova wrote: \u201cIf I chose to be with Russia, this does not mean that I should walk in a totalitarian system, be silent or, for example, rejoice that the regime, which I do not want for my country, is being exported somewhere else.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd this regime will finally turn our life into one endless hell. What\u2019s there. Already turned.\u201d<\/p>\n

Baronova said the Instagram post was the last straw, leading her to quit RT.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was the moment I decided, \u2018OK, that\u2019s it,’\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The Kremlin has launched a harsh crackdown on news organizations both foreign and domestic<\/a> whose journalists are based in Russia.<\/p>\n

Reporters who do not toe the government line on reporting on Ukraine are not allowed to operate freely in the country.<\/p>\n
