He was not involved in the study.<\/p>\n<p>Economists at the college carried out a <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.krieger.jhu.edu\/iae\/files\/2022\/01\/A-Literature-Review-and-Meta-Analysis-of-the-Effects-of-Lockdowns-on-COVID-19-Mortality.pdf\"><strong>meta-analysis<\/strong><\/a> and found that restrictions imposed in the spring of 2020 &#8211; including stay-at-home orders, compulsory masks and social distancing &#8211; only reduced COVID mortality by 0.2 percent.<\/p>\n<p>They warned that lockdowns caused &#8216;enormous economic and social costs&#8217; and concluded that they were &#8216;ill-founded and should be rejected as a pandemic policy instrument&#8217; going forward.<\/p>\n<p>Makary said the small number of lives saved by the lockdowns doesn&#8217;t come close to those lost to lack of health care, such as patients who forwent cancer treatments.<\/p>\n<p>The study found that lockdowns imposed in many US cities in the spring of 2020 led to a reduction of COVID deaths by 0.2 percent.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Now compare that number, which turns out to be about 1,800 individuals, to the number of non-COVID deaths, what we call the &#8220;excess non-COVID mortality&#8221; in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It was 124,000 excess deaths in year one. So, over two years, it was about a quarter million people who died.
