{"id":248125,"date":"2022-01-09T09:14:08","date_gmt":"2022-01-09T09:14:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/?p=248125"},"modified":"2022-01-11T07:24:31","modified_gmt":"2022-01-11T07:24:31","slug":"us-nato-reject-russias-call-for-halt-of-eastward-expansion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/?p=248125","title":{"rendered":"US, NATO Reject Russia\u2019s Call for Halt of Eastward Expansion"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Dave DeCamp \u2013 AntiWar.com Jan 7, 2022<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Blinken-Biden.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-235761\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Blinken-Biden.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a>On Friday, the US and NATO <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/europe-russia-ukraine-vladimir-putin-emmanuel-macron-4b0815a24bb98ca7e3b81aa0dc6b1838\">rejected a Russian call for the military alliance to halt its eastward expansion. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Amid tensions around Ukraine, Russia submitted a series of security proposals to the US, and chief among the Russian requests is a guarantee that Ukraine won\u2019t join NATO.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNATO never promised not to admit new members; it could not and would not,\u201d Secretary of State Antony Blinken said after a virtual meeting of NATO\u2019s foreign ministers.<\/p>\n<p>NATO Secretary-General made similar comments earlier in the day. \u201cWe will not compromise on core principles, including the right for every nation to decide its own path, including what kind of security arrangements it wants to be a part of,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>US and Russian officials are due to meet in Geneva on January 10th to discuss Ukraine and other issues, and NATO will hold talks with Moscow on January 12th. Blinken accused Russia of making unreasonable demands in an attempt to sabotage diplomacy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCertainly part of [Putin\u2019s] playbook is to put out a list of absolutely non-starter demands and then to claim that the other side is not engaging and then use that as somehow justification for aggressive action,\u201d Blinken said.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine has been a prospective NATO member since 2008 and cooperates with the alliance on military exercises. Ukraine\u2019s ascent into NATO was never a concern when Viktor Yanukovych was president from 2010 to 2014. But after he was ousted in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WV9J6sxCs5k\">US-backed coup<\/a>, US and NATO cooperation with Ukraine has increased significantly.<\/p>\n<p>Since the 2014 coup, the US has provided Ukraine with over $2 billion in military aid.
