It\u2019s a 49 percent white, 38 percent black city. And we learn how in 2020 just how much black lives truly matter, with 89 percent of those shot being black. Interesting, 97 percent of those suspects who have been caught for those shootings during the racial reckoning of 2020 were black.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, 97% of suspects in 2020 Durham arrested for shootings were black. The city is 38 percent black\u2026 [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbs17.com\/news\/local-news\/durham-county-news\/we-have-to-stop-this-cycle-black-families-in-durham-disproportionately-impacted-by-shootings\/\">\u2018We have to stop this cycle:\u2019 Black families in Durham disproportionately impacted by shootings,<\/a> CBS17.com, November 19, 2021]:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Sheryl Smith is a grandmother who is raising five children in Franklin Village, a low-income housing community in East Durham mostly made up of Black families.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>While she is working to give her grandchildren the best life possible, she said gunfire continues to plague her community.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>A couple of months ago, two people were shot in the parking lot right outside of their apartment.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Smith\u2019s granddaughter, 11-year-old Na-Keria Bagley, said she hears gunfire in her neighborhood every other day.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>\u201cWhen we were younger, we were scared to sleep in our room, so we made pallets in the living room to sleep on until the shootings went down,\u201d Bagley said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Smith said gun violence is something her family has dealt with for years.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>This November marks 16 years since Smith\u2019s 18-year-old son Todd Douglas was shot and killed while walking home from the store in 2005.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>\u201cAfter my son was murdered, it has really changed my whole world,\u201d Smith said. \u201cWe have to stop this cycle, it has to end.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>According to data from the Durham Police Department, Black families are disproportionately impacted by gun violence.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>While only 37 percent of Durham\u2019s population is Black, so far this year 89 percent of the people who have been shot are African American.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>During 2020, which was a record-breaking year for shootings in Durham, 284 of the 318 people shot last year were Black.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>When looking at the ethnicity of those committing the shootings, last year 76 out of the 78 individuals arrested for the shootings were African American.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>\u201cThis is a systemic failure,\u201d said DeWarren Langley, executive director of the Charles Hamilton Houston Foundation, which is a non-profit organization that provides mentorship to young boys and men of color.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>\u201cWe have too many communities that lack resources and that then turns into engagement in other alternatives, like gangs and the drug enterprises, and that is what gun violence is a direct result of,\u201d Langley said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Langley said many Black students are dealing with economic disparities at home, and that can impact their schoolwork.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With just a simple analysis of the data when published by a city government with a sizable black population, we learn how nearly all gun violence in said city is committed by blacks.<\/p>\n<p>Black lives matter?<\/p>\n<p>97% of suspects in 2020 Durham arrested for shootings were black. The city is 38 percent black\u2026 the data shows otherwise.
