{"id":239687,"date":"2021-08-02T07:26:49","date_gmt":"2021-08-02T07:26:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/?p=239687"},"modified":"2021-08-03T06:50:50","modified_gmt":"2021-08-03T06:50:50","slug":"highly-likely-iran-was-behind-fatal-oil-tanker-attack-dominic-raab","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/?p=239687","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Highly likely\u2019 Iran was behind fatal oil tanker attack \u2013 Dominic Raab"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\">The Guardian \u2013 Aug 1, 2021<\/h1>\n<p>The UK has said it is \u201chighly likely\u201d that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/iran\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Iran<\/a> carried out an \u201cunlawful and callous attack\u201d on a ship in the Middle East, which left a Briton dead.<\/p>\n<p>The foreign secretary, Dominic Raab, said the government believed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2021\/jul\/30\/two-reportedly-killed-in-attack-on-israeli-linked-oil-tanker-off-oman\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">drone attack on the oil tanker<\/a> off the coast of Oman was \u201cdeliberate, targeted, and a clear violation of international law by Iran\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The strike on the oil tanker Mercer Street on Thursday night was the first known fatal attack after years of assaults on commercial shipping in the region linked to tensions with Iran over its tattered nuclear deal.<\/p>\n<p>The British maritime security firm Ambrey said the attack killed one of its employees onboard the vessel. A Romanian crew member was also killed.<\/p>\n<p>Iran denied responsibility after Israel\u2019s prime minister, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/naftali-bennett\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Naftali Bennett<\/a>, directly blamed it for the attack, but Raab said the UK government backed Bennett\u2019s claim.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe UK condemns the unlawful and callous attack committed on a merchant vessel off the coast of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/oman\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Oman<\/a>, which killed a British and a Romanian national,\u201d said the foreign secretary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur thoughts are with the friends and family of those killed in the incident.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe this attack was deliberate, targeted, and a clear violation of international law by Iran.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUK assessments have concluded that it is highly likely that Iran attacked the MV Mercer Street in international waters off Oman on 29 July using one or more unmanned aerial vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIran must end such attacks, and vessels must be allowed to navigate freely in accordance with international law. The UK is working with our international partners on a concerted response to this unacceptable attack.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The shadow foreign secretary, Lisa Nandy, urged the prime minister to \u201cmake it clear\u201d to Iran that the killing of a British national onboard the Mercer Street vessel would \u201ccarry costs\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis reckless Iranian attack on a merchant vessel in international waters is a flagrant breach of international law,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is tragic that this has led to the death of two sailors, including one Briton. We send our deepest condolences to their families.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe prime minister must make it clear to the incoming Iranian president that lawless actions will carry costs. This is the moment where Britain must show we are resolute in our determination to end this pattern of behaviour.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe breakdown of a clear strategy to deal with Iran has not served the UK or our allies well in recent years.
