and Germany is &#8216;declining politically and economically&#8217;, the former head of the country&#8217;s spy agency has warned.<\/p>\n<p>Hans-Georg Maassen, who ran\u00a0the Office for the Protection of the Constitution until 2018, slammed the Chancellor&#8217;s border controls in a scathing interview.<\/p>\n<p>The 58-year-old blasted Mrs Merkel&#8217;s decision to let in around 1.2million migrants in 2015 while he was in office under her<\/p>\n<p>He claimed Germans &#8216;cannot understand why ever more people are coming into this country even though they obviously have no right to asylum&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>His comments come just a week after a\u00a0Somali\u00a0immigrant &#8211; who got into the country as a refugee in 2015 &#8211; knifed three people to death.<\/p>\n<p>The 24-year-old yelled &#8216;Allahu Akbar&#8217; as he carried out his sickening attack in\u00a0Wurzburg before being shot by police.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QNJCi1oFG_M\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n&#8212;<\/div>\n<p>Mr Maassen, who is running as an MP for the CDU in\u00a0Thuringia, told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/ex-spy-chief-undo-angela-merkel-legacy-liberalism-germany-qz785t57x\"><strong>Times<\/strong><\/a>:\u00a0&#8216;The CDU has clearly taken a lot of damage over the past 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It&#8217;s become a club for electing the chancellor under the slogan &#8216;We want Merkel re-elected&#8217;, but the actual political and programmatic substance is gone.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>He admitted Mrs Merkel was a &#8216;strong-willed woman and a top political performer&#8217; and praised her role in the eurozone debt crisis.<\/p>\n<p>But he said: &#8216;I just think it&#8217;s a shame that we are falling far below our potential in Germany.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I have the impression that many people have made their peace with the fact that we are declining ever further politically and economically.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>He added:\u00a0&#8216;[Germans] simply cannot understand why ever more people are coming into this country even though they obviously have no right to asylum;
