New research by <em>Declassified<\/em> reveals the extent of this global military presence for the first time \u2013 as the government announces an extra 10% spending on defence.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>UK military has base sites in five countries around <\/strong><strong>China: naval base in Singapore, garrisons in Brunei, drone testing sites in Australia, three facilities in Nepal and quick reaction force in Afghanistan<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Cyprus hosts 17 UK military installations including firing ranges and spy stations, with some located outside UK\u2019s \u201csovereign base areas\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Britain maintains military presence in seven Arab monarchies where citizens have little or no say in how they are governed<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>UK personnel are stationed across 15 sites in Saudi Arabia, supporting internal repression and the war in Yemen, and at 16 sites in Oman, some run directly by British military<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>In Africa, British troops are based in Kenya, Somalia, Djibouti, Malawi, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Mali<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Many UK overseas bases are located in tax havens such as Bermuda and Cayman Islands<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Britain\u2019s military has a permanent presence at 145 base sites in 42 countries or territories around the world, research by <em>Declassified UK<\/em> has found.<\/p>\n<p>The size of this global military presence is far <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/permanent-joint-operating-bases-pjobs\/fd\">larger<\/a><\/u> than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.raf.mod.uk\/recruitment\/our-bases\">previously<\/a> <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mod.uk\/deployments\/\">thought<\/a><\/u> and is likely to mean that the UK has the second largest military network in the world, after the United States.<\/p>\n<p>It is the first time the true size of this network has been revealed.<\/p>\n<p>The UK uses 17 separate military installations in Cyprus as well as 15 in Saudi Arabia and 16 in Oman \u2013 the latter both dictatorships with whom the UK has especially close military relations.<\/p>\n<p>The UK\u2019s base sites include 60 it manages itself in addition to 85 facilities run by its allies where the UK has a significant presence.<\/p>\n<p>These appear to fit the description of what General Mark Carleton-Smith, Britain\u2019s Chief of the General Staff, recently termed as \u201c<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-8788635\/British-Army-persistent-presence-Asia-suggests-chief.html\">lily pads<\/a><\/u>\u201d \u2013 sites which the UK has easy access to as and when required.<\/p>\n<p><em>Declassified<\/em> has not included in the figures the UK\u2019s small troop contributions to UN peacekeeping missions in South Sudan or the Cyprus buffer zone, nor staffing commitments at NATO administrative sites in Europe or most of its special forces deployments, which are largely unknown.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/embed?mid=1SdLzmlGoZYwkpqGA5hZBvemAXg36xUBu\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n&#8212;<\/div>\n<p>The findings come days after Prime Minister Boris Johnson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/defence-secures-largest-investment-since-the-cold-war\">announced<\/a> an extra \u00a316-billion would be spent on the UK military over the next four years \u2013 a 10% increase.<\/p>\n<p>The spending announcement was originally meant to be combined with a review of defence strategy, that was being championed by Johnson\u2019s former chief adviser Dominic Cummings.<\/p>\n<p>The results of Whitehall\u2019s \u201cintegrated defence review\u201d are now not expected until next year. Indications suggest the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2019\/dec\/16\/dominic-cummings-seeks-to-launch-mod-spending-review\">review<\/a> will recommend a traditional British strategy of building more overseas military bases.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, former Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said the UK needs a more <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/larisamlbrown\/status\/1313090963267608577\">permanent<\/a> presence in the Asia-Pacific region. The current Defence Secretary, Ben Wallace, has gone further.
