On April 1, 1933, shortly after Hitler was appointed chancellor, the Nazis staged a boycott of Jewish businesses in Germany. Members of the Storm Troopers (\u201cdie Sturmabteilung,\u201d or the \u201cStorm Department,\u201d as I like to think of them) stood around outside of Jewish-owned stores with Gothic-lettered placards reading \u201cGermans! Defend yourselves! Do not buy from Jews!\u201d<\/p>\n

The boycott itself was a total disaster \u2014 most Germans ignored it and just went on with their lives \u2014 but it was the beginning of the official persecution of the Jews and totalitarianism in Nazi Germany.<\/p>\n

Last week, here in \u201cNew Normal\u201d Germany, the government (which, it goes without saying, bears no resemblance to the Nazi regime, or any other totalitarian regime) implemented a social-segregation system that bans anyone who refuses to publicly conform to the official \u201cNew Normal\u201d ideology from participating in German society.<\/p>\n

From now on, only those who have an official \u201cvaccination pass\u201d or proof of a negative PCR test are allowed to sit down and eat at restaurants, shop at \u201cnon-essential\u201d stores, or go to bars, or the cinema, or wherever.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a notice from the website of Prater, a popular beer garden in Berlin:<\/p>\n

Of course, there is absolutely no valid comparison to be made between these two events, or between Nazi Germany and \u201cNew Normal\u201d Germany, nor would I ever imply that there was.<\/p>\n

That would be illegal in \u201cNew Normal\u201d Germany, as it would be considered \u201crelativizing the Holocaust,\u201d not to mention being\u00a0\u201canti-democratic and\/or delegitimizing the state in a way that endangers security,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0or whatever. Plus, it\u2019s not like there are SA goons standing outside shops and restaurants with signs reading \u201cGermans! Defend yourselves! Don\u2019t sell to the Unvaccinated and Untested!\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s just that it\u2019s now illegal to do that, i.e., sell anything to those of us whom the media and the government have systematically stigmatized as \u201cCovid deniers\u201d because we haven\u2019t converted to the new official ideology and submitted to being \u201cvaccinated\u201d or \u201ctested.\u201d<\/p>\n

Protesting the new official ideology is also illegal in \u201cNew Normal\u201d Germany.<\/p>\n

OK, I think I should probably rephrase that. I certainly don\u2019t want to misinform anyone. Protesting the \u201cNew Normal\u201d isn\u2019t outlawed <\/em>per se. You\u2019re totally allowed to apply for a permit to protest against the \u201cCovid restrictions\u201d on the condition that everyone taking part in your protest wears a medical-looking N95 mask and maintains a distance of 1.5 meters from every other medical-masked protester\u2026which is kind of like permitting anti-racism protests as long as the protesters all wear Ku Klux Klan robes and perform a choreographed karaoke of Lynyrd Skynyrd\u2019s\u00a0Sweet Home Alabama<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Who says the Germans don\u2019t have a sense of humor?<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t mean to single out the Germans. There is nothing inherently totalitarian, or fascist, or robotically authoritarian and hyper-conformist about the Germans, as a people.<\/p>\n

The fact that the vast majority of Germans clicked their heels and started mindlessly following orders, like they did in Nazi Germany, the moment the \u201cNew Normal\u201d was introduced last year doesn\u2019t mean that all Germans are fascists by nature. Most Americans did the same thing. So did the British, the Australians, the Spanish, the French, the Canadians, and a long list of others. It\u2019s just that, well, I happen to live here, so I\u2019ve watched as Germany has been transformed into \u201cNew Normal Germany\u201d up close and personal, and it has definitely made an impression on me.<\/p>\n

The ease with which the German authorities implemented the new official ideology, and how fanatically it has been embraced by the majority of Germans, came as something of a shock. I had naively believed that, in light of their history, the Germans would be among the first to recognize a nascent totalitarian movement predicated on textbook Goebbelsian Big Lies (i.e.,\u00a0manipulated Covid \u201ccase\u201d and \u201cdeath\u201d statistics<\/a>), and would resist it en masse, or at least take a moment to question the lies their leaders were hysterically barking at them.<\/p>\n

I couldn\u2019t have been more wrong.<\/p>\n

Here we are, over a year later, and waiters and shop clerks are \u201cchecking papers\u201d to enforce compliance with the new official ideology. (And, yes, the \u201cNew Normal\u201d is an official ideology. When you strip away the illusion of an apocalyptic plague, there isn\u2019t any other description for it).<\/p>\n

Perfectly healthy, medical-masked people are lining up in the streets to be experimentally \u201cvaccinated.\u201d Lockdown-bankrupted shops and restaurants have been converted into walk-in \u201cPCR-test stations.\u201d\u00a0The government is debating mandatory \u201cvaccination\u201d of children in kindergarten<\/a>.\u00a0Goon squads are arresting octogenarians for picnicking on the sidewalk without permission<\/a>. And so on. At this point, I\u2019m just sitting here waiting for the news that mass \u201cdisinfection camps\u201d are being set up to solve the \u201cUnvaccinated Question<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Whoops\u2026there I go again, \u201crelativizing the Holocaust.\u201d I really need to stop doing that.<\/p>\n

The Germans take this stuff very seriously<\/a>, especially with Israel under relentless attack by the desperately impoverished people it has locked inside an enormous walled ghetto, and is self-defensively ethnically cleansing.<\/p>\n

But, seriously, there is no similarity whatsoever between Nazi Germany and \u201cNew Normal\u201d Germany.<\/p>\n

Sure,\u00a0both systems suspended the constitution<\/a>, declared a national \u201cstate of emergency\u201d enabling the government to rule by decree, inundated the masses with insane propaganda and manipulated \u201cscientific facts,\u201d outlawed protests,\u00a0criminalized dissent<\/a>, implemented a variety of public rituals, and symbols, and a social segregation system, to enforce compliance with their official ideologies, and demonized anyone who refused to comply\u2026but, other than that, there\u2019s no similarity, and anyone who suggests there is is a dangerous social-deviant extremist who probably needs to be quarantined somewhere, or perhaps dealt with in some other \u201cspecial\u201d way.<\/p>\n

Plus, the two ideologies are completely different. One was a fanatical totalitarian ideology based on imaginary racial superiority and the other is a fanatical totalitarian ideology based on an imaginary \u201capocalyptic plague\u201d \u2026 so what the hell am I even talking about?<\/p>\n

On top of which, no swastikas, right? No swastikas, no totalitarianism! And nobody\u2019s mass-murdering the Jews, that I know of, and that\u2019s the critical thing, after all!<\/p>\n

So, never mind. Just ignore all that crazy stuff I just told you about \u201cNew Normal\u201d Germany. Don\u2019t worry about \u201cNew Normal\u201d America, either. Or \u201cNew Normal\u201d Great Britain. Or \u201cNew Normal\u201d wherever.<\/p>\n

Get experimentally \u201cvaccinated.\u201d Experimentally \u201cvaccinate\u201d your kids. Prove your loyalty to the Reich \u2026 sorry, I meant to global capitalism. Ignore those\u00a0reports of people dying and suffering horrible adverse effects<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Wear your mask. Wear it forever. God knows what other viruses are out there, just waiting to defile your bodily fluids and cause you to experience a flu-like illness, or cut you down in the prime of your seventies or eighties \u2026 and, Jesus, I almost forgot \u201clong Covid.\u201d That in itself is certainly enough to justify radically restructuring society so that it resembles an upscale hospital theme park staffed by paranoid, smiley-faced fascists in fanciful designer Hazmat suits.<\/p>\n

Oh, and keep your \u201cvaccination papers\u201d in order. You never know when you\u2019re going to have to show them to some official at the airport, or a shop, or restaurant, or to your boss, or your landlord, or the police, or your bank, or your ISP, or your Tinder date \u2026 or some other \u201cNew Normal\u201d authority figure.<\/p>\n

I mean, you don\u2019t want to be mistaken for a \u201cCovid denier,\u201d or an \u201canti-vaxxer,\u201d or a \u201cconspiracy theorist,\u201d or some other type of ideological deviant, and be banished from society, do you?<\/p>\n
