{"id":230899,"date":"2021-04-02T06:50:46","date_gmt":"2021-04-02T06:50:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/?p=230899"},"modified":"2021-04-04T07:27:49","modified_gmt":"2021-04-04T07:27:49","slug":"asu-dean-writes-book-alleging-that-grading-students-writing-is-white-supremacy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/?p=230899","title":{"rendered":"ASU dean writes book alleging that grading students\u2019 writing is &#8216;white supremacy&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Ben Zeisloft \u2013 Campus Reform March 30, 2021<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>An Arizona State University academic wrote a book explaining why grading students\u2019 work based on quality is \u201cwhite supremacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cisa.asu.edu\/node\/7955\">Asao Inoue<\/a> \u2014 who <a href=\"https:\/\/isearch.asu.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/cv\/CV%2067%20-%20public.pdf\">teaches<\/a> first-year writing courses and serves as associate dean for Academic Affairs, Equity, and Inclusion \u2014 wrote <em>Labor-Based Grading Contracts: Building Equity and Inclusion in the Compassionate Writing Classroom,\u00a0<\/em>in which he <a href=\"https:\/\/wac.colostate.edu\/docs\/books\/labor\/contracts.pdf\">advocates<\/a> for a system of grading that circumvents merit.<\/p>\n<p>Inoue \u2014 whose \u201cresearch focuses on antiracist and social justice theory\u201d \u2014 explains that his book discusses \u201cgrading literacy performances more broadly\u201d \u2014 namely, by judging \u201cfinal course grades purely by the labor students complete, not by any judgments of the quality of their writing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the qualities of student writing is still at the center of the classroom and feedback, it has no bearing on the course grade,\u201d he explains. \u201cWhy take our judgments of quality out of the tabulation of course grades and progress in a course? Because all grading and assessment exist within systems that uphold singular, dominant standards that are racist, and White supremacist when used uniformly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrading, because it requires a single, dominant standard, is a racist and White supremacist practice,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<p>Inoue describes his labor-based system as a tool to enact his \u201csocial justice agenda\u201d in his \u201cclassroom\u2019s antiracist writing assessment ecologies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Inoue\u2019s book contains 358 pages.<\/p>\n<p>In more terse language, Inoue has recently made calls to \u201cdestroy grading.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While responding to a question about \u201ccurricular changes\u201d needed to \u201chelp our Black students develop positive racial identity,\u201d Inoue said \u201cgotta destroy grading, destroy the White habits of language that make all standards of language in classrooms, not to ignore them but to stop thinking they are THE keys to success and good communication, critical thinking, etc.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the past, Inoue has also critiqued the notion of meritocracy a \u201cmyth.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">MLK makes a beautiful critique of the &quot;bootless&quot; Black Americans and the myth of meritocracy.
