Oxford undergraduates are being told that simply not being racist \u2018isn\u2019t good enough\u2019 and they must be prepared to take action on the issue.<\/p>\n

The revelation from a workshop at St Hugh\u2019s College comes amid growing scrutiny about anti-racism training across the university, which critics say does not work.<\/p>\n

While not mandatory, students were told they were \u2018expected to make time\u2019 to attend the It\u2019s About Race event.<\/p>\n

Under the heading \u2018Be an anti-racist\u2019 on one slide, they were told: \u2018Are you racist? \u201cNo\u201d isn\u2019t a good enough answer.\u2019<\/p>\n

The slide stated: \u2018We need to… stop thinking that injustice going on in the world isn\u2019t to an extent are [sic] fault\u2019, adding: \u2018Stop being a non-racist and start being an anti-racist.\u2019<\/p>\n

Another slide encouraged a \u2018commitment to action\u2019, asking the question: \u2018What is your individual contribution\/commitment\/pledge to tackle inequality and racism?\u2019<\/p>\n

Such courses are meant to question ingrained attitudes.<\/p>\n

But last year an official report found strong evidence \u2018that such training has no sustained impact on behaviour and may even be counter-productive\u2019 \u2013 leading many government departments to scrap the practice.<\/p>\n

Theresa May, Amal Clooney and Myanmar\u2019s detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi are among former St Hugh\u2019s students.<\/p>\n

One member of the college who attended the workshop said: \u2018I have been let down on several fronts since I\u2019ve been here.<\/p>\n

\u2018Worst of all is the consistent emphasis of how \u201cracist\u201d our institution is\u2026 it is a colossal waste of time and money and does nothing but prove that Oxford is increasingly out of touch with the real world. I have seen no inkling of racism since I have been here.\u2019<\/p>\n

A St Hugh\u2019s spokesman said: \u2018As with all training, we are evaluating and reviewing this course.\u2019 Last week it was reported that other Oxford colleges were offering \u2018unconscious bias\u2019 courses, despite the Government\u2019s scepticism.<\/p>\n

Oxford\u2019s grandest college, Christ Church, has had compulsory training on the topic in place for \u2018several years\u2019, while Boris Johnson\u2019s alma mater, Balliol College, also offers it.<\/p>\n

And students at Margaret Thatcher\u2019s old college, Somerville, were recently told they had to achieve 100 per cent in a test on the topic, until the policy was challenged by campaigners.<\/p>\n
