{"id":227920,"date":"2021-02-20T07:12:47","date_gmt":"2021-02-20T07:12:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/?p=227920"},"modified":"2021-02-23T06:42:04","modified_gmt":"2021-02-23T06:42:04","slug":"prepping-for-a-cyber-pandemic-cyber-polygon-2021-to-stage-supply-chain-attack-simulation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/?p=227920","title":{"rendered":"Prepping for a cyber pandemic: Cyber Polygon 2021 to stage supply chain attack simulation"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Tim Hinchcliff &#8212; The Sociable Feb 12, 2021<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>The World Economic Forum (WEF) will stage another cyber attack exercise as it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/events\/the-davos-agenda-2021\/sessions\/averting-a-cyber-pandemic\">continues to prep<\/a> for a potential cyber pandemic that founder Klaus Schwab says will be worse than the current global crisis.<\/p>\n<p>The SolarWinds hack served as a wake-up call to the supply chain attack vulnerabilities still present in public and private organizations, and it served as a warning that the next breach could be exponentially worse in spreading through any device connected to the internet.<\/p>\n<p>Following up on last year\u2019s Cyber Polygon cyber attack exercise and event aimed at preventing a digital pandemic, the WEF <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/projects\/cyber-polygon\">has announced<\/a> that the <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberpolygon.com\/\">2021 edition<\/a> will be taking place on July 9.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cA cyber attack with COVID-like characteristics would spread faster and farther than any biological virus\u201d \u2014 World Economic Forum<\/p>\n<p>This year, Cyber Polygon 2021 will simulate a fictional cyber attack with participants from dozens of countries responding to \u201c<strong>a targeted supply chain attack on a corporate ecosystem in real time.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-0oZA1B3ooI\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n&#8212;<\/div>\n<p>According to the WEF, COVID-19 was known as an anticipated risk, and so is its digital equivalent.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s more, \u201cA cyber attack with COVID-like characteristics would spread faster and farther than any biological virus. Its reproductive rate would be around 10 times greater than what we\u2019ve experienced with the coronavirus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cIt is important to use the COVID-19 crisis as a timely opportunity to reflect on the lessons of cybersecurity community to draw and improve our unpreparedness for a potential cyber pandemic\u201d \u2014 Klaus Schwab<\/p>\n<p>Here, we take a look at three trends emerging from Cyber Polygon 2020 to uncover what moves the public and private sectors may make in anticipation of a digital pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>But first, where did the notion of a cyber pandemic come from?<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>An Anticipated Cyber Pandemic<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In his welcoming remarks at Cyber Polygon 2020, WEF Founder Klaus Schwab warned about a coming \u201ccyber pandemic\u201d that would be worse than the current global crisis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all know, but still pay insufficient attention to, the frightening scenario of a comprehensive cyber attack, which would bring a complete halt to the power supply, transportation, hospital services, our society as a whole,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe COVID-19 crisis would be seen in this respect as a small disturbance in comparison to a major cyber attack.\u201d<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EOvz1Flfrfw\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n&#8212;<\/div>\n<p>Schwab added, \u201cIt is important to use the COVID-19 crisis as a timely opportunity to reflect on the lessons of cybersecurity community to draw and improve our unpreparedness for a potential cyber pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the digital world encroaches on our physical and biological worlds, an effective cyber attack could compromise anything connected to the internet, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Medical devices that keep people alive<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem of connected devices that run smart homes (i.e. cameras, microphones, sensors, etc.)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The <a href=\"https:\/\/sociable.co\/technology\/great-reset-meets-internet-of-bodies-manipulating-human-behavior-authoritarian-surveillance\/\">Internet of Bodies (IoB)<\/a> ecosystem of digitally-connected humans<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Global financial systems<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Energy grids<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Water treatment facilities<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Government IT systems<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Military and defense infrastructure<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>And more<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Currently, \u201cThe only way to stop the exponential propagation of a COVID-like cyber attack threat,\u201d according to the WEF, \u201cis to fully disconnect the millions of vulnerable devices from one another and from the internet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But, \u201cA single day without the internet would cost our economies more than $50 billion, and that\u2019s before considering economic and societal damages should these devices be linked to essential services, such as transports or healthcare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe COVID-19 crisis would be seen in this respect as a small disturbance in comparison to a major cyber attack\u201d \u2014 Klaus Schwab<\/p>\n<p>Needless to say, a cyber pandemic would wreak havoc on nearly all aspects of society.<\/p>\n<p>However, the devil is in the details, and the solutions recommended for a cyber pandemic could be far more detrimental to individual liberty than the cyber attack itself.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Cyber Polygon 2020 Emerging Trends<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The central theme of the Cyber Polygon 2020 exercise was \u201c<strong>digital pandemic: how to prevent a crisis and to reinforce cybersecurity on all levels<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TlKy9Mk4QGc\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n&#8212;<\/div>\n<p>The goal of last year\u2019s Cyber Polygon event was to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Develop the teams\u2019 competencies in repelling cyber attacks<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Engage the management of global organizations and corporations in the cybersecurity dialogue<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Raise public awareness in cybersecurity<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The exercise featured two parallel tracks: a live stream for a\u00a0mass audience and technical training for cybersecurity specialists, and 120 of\u00a0the largest Russian and international organizations from 29\u00a0countries joined the technical training <strong>to\u00a0practice response to\u00a0a\u00a0targeted attack, aimed at\u00a0hacking company data and undermining its reputation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>While the technical training side of the event was dedicated to responding to a single attack, the conversations from the live stream portions provided the most insights for dealing with the potential fallout of the attack \u2014 the digital pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Here are three trends emerging from the\u00a0<strong>live stream<\/strong> discussions and the Cyber Polygon 2020\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cyberpolygon.com\/upload\/Cyber_Polygon_report_results_2020_EN_v1_1.pdf\">results report<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>1) Governments Will Inevitably Move Towards Digital Identity Schemes<\/h3>\n<p>Speaking at Cyber Polygon 2020, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair stated with confidence that governments are \u201cabsolutely, inevitably\u201d moving in the direction of digital identity adoption.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cDigital ID for me is a very big part of the future\u201d \u2014 Tony Blair<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sociable.co\/technology\/your-digital-identity-used-against-you-great-reset\/\">Digital identity<\/a> is a major component of the WEF\u2019s great reset agenda as it relates to transformative technologies powering the Fourth Industrial Revolution.<\/p>\n<p>A digital identity keeps a record of everything you do online, including what you share on social media, the websites you visit, and your smartphone\u2019s geolocation, and it can house all of the credentials you would normally find in a physical wallet, such as your driver\u2019s license, insurance card, and credit cards.<\/p>\n<p>In his talk, Blair didn\u2019t make the case for why having a digital identity was actually necessary to prevent a cyber pandemic, but rather that digital identities would be an inevitable part of the digital ecosystem, and so governments should work with technology companies to protect and regulate their use.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDigital ID for me is a very big part of the future,\u201d said Blair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd so what I think\u2019s most important is that we from the political side wake-up to the potential of technology and engage with the changemakers inventing the technology, so that we understand it and can regulate it sensibly and not stupidly.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_227921\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a essentially shut them out of participating in civil society by erasing them completely, or exploiting their information in such a way that blocks victims from proving they have money in the bank, a passport that allows them to travel, a valid driver\u2019s license, proof of immunity, and any other credentials that are necessary for citizens to access goods and services.<\/p>\n<p>And while digital identities <a href=\"https:\/\/sociable.co\/technology\/digital-identity-and-microsofts-move-blockchain-based-id-system\/\">show promise towards improving the livelihoods<\/a> of millions when governed ethically,\u00a0they are also\u00a0used by authoritarian governments\u00a0to profile and police citizen behavior under <a href=\"https:\/\/sociable.co\/government-and-policy\/globalists-embrace-social-media-location-behavioral-data-alternative-credit-scoring\/\">a social credit system<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Whether the data be secured or not, <strong>individual liberty will depend on how the technology is used and the level of trust given to those who govern it<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>According to a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www3.weforum.org\/docs\/WEF_INSIGHT_REPORT_Digital%20Identity.pdf\">WEF report from 2018<\/a>, \u201cdigital identity determines what products, services and information we can access \u2013 or, conversely, what is closed off to us\u201d\u00a0\u2014 the level of which to be determined by our online behavior.<\/p>\n<p>If Blair is right and governments will inevitably adopt digital identities, then a well-coordinated cyber attack affecting digital identity systems would lead to a cyber pandemic affecting the whole of society.<\/p>\n<h3>2) \u2018Fake News\u2019 Is a Digital Pandemic &amp; the Majority of Citizens Are Incapable of Thinking Critically<\/h3>\n<p>Cyber Polygon 2020 dedicated one of its live streams sessions to the concept of \u201cfake news\u201d as being a deadly, digital pandemic plaguing 2020.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cIf you\u2019re talking about someone who [\u2026]\u00a0has not read very much, whose knowledge is limited \u2014 that person is much easier to fool and much more ready to accept whatever he or she is told\u201d \u2014 Vladimir Pozner, Journalist<\/p>\n<p>By the end of their conversation, BBC World News presenter Nik Gowing and veteran journalist Vladimir Pozner arrived at the conclusion that the average person of voting age was not capable of thinking critically for themselves and was more likely to swallow any information put out there than someone who went to a university.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NPSSvap4iAQ\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n&#8212;<\/div>\n<p>Both Gowing and Pozner agreed that the majority of citizens were uneducated, were not well-read, and hadn\u2019t traveled enough to know the difference between what was fake and what was real.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pozner:<\/strong> \u201cYou\u2019re launching your argument based on a sense that your average viewer, listener, reader has a critical outlook from the outset.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that there are an awful lot of people who don\u2019t have that critical outlook and just swallow it whole.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gowan:<\/strong> \u201cI agree [\u2026]\u00a0\u201cYou have to have that questioning instinct.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pozner:<\/strong> \u201cIf someone is well-educated, has a university education, has read, has traveled \u2014 that person\u2019s reaction to what he or she is reading or listening to is one thing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re talking about someone who finished grammar school or the like and has not had the opportunity because of where that person comes from, has not read very much, whose knowledge is limited \u2014 that person is much easier to fool and much more ready to accept whatever he or she is told.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we\u2019re dealing with this deliberate lie, who is it directed at mainly?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my opinion, it\u2019s mainly directed towards the ordinary person \u2014 not towards the intellectual elite, not towards those who have the ability to actually think it through, but to those who have not had that advantage, to the less privileged people who are the majority, and who are the ones who vote, and who are the ones who, ultimately, when they say, \u2018<em>the people<\/em>,\u2019 they are \u2018<em>the people<\/em>,\u2019 and I think they are the ones who are victimized by this trend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With the assumption that average people aren\u2019t capable of thinking critically and that the majority of citizens are therefore \u201cvictims,\u201d the two journalists turned the conversation towards how to protect victims of the \u201cfake news pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But in the end, they had no idea how to do that, and fake news, misinformation, and disinformation remain \u201cexistential threats.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cyber Polygon 2020 didn\u2019t issue any concrete recommendations with regards to dealing with fake news; however, the WEF-led Event 201 coronavirus pandemic simulation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centerforhealthsecurity.org\/event201\/recommendations.html\">did recommend<\/a> that, \u201cGovernments will need to partner with traditional and social media companies to research and develop nimble approaches to countering misinformation.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>3) Trustworthy Public &amp; Private Partnerships Will Need To Be Strengthened<\/h3>\n<p>Establishing trustworthy collaborations among the public and private sectors can help prevent a digital pandemic, according to the Polygon 2020 report.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA critical situation cannot be tackled by an organization or a lone individual,\u201d it reads, adding,\u00a0\u201cIn a highly interconnected world, a single cyber attack can spread exponentially across the global community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis situation can be prevented by promoting collaboration between the public and private sectors and law enforcement agencies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFurthermore, efficient interaction requires the implementation and regulation of a range of standards, the exchange of information and establishing trustworthy relationships.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cWhen we do see this next crisis, it will be faster than what we\u2019ve seen with COVID, the exponential growth rate will be much steeper, the impact will be greater, and as a result the economic and social implications will be even more significant\u201d \u2014 Jeremy Jurgens, WEF Chief Business Officer<\/p>\n<p>However, with countries like <a href=\"https:\/\/sociable.co\/technology\/china-is-stealing-our-stuff-and-theyre-not-even-hiding-it-us-tech-protection-task-force\/\">China stealing intellectual property<\/a>, sponsoring state-run cyber attacks that have <a href=\"https:\/\/sociable.co\/technology\/china-equifax-hack-brazen-criminal-heist-americans-sensitive-information\/\">compromised the personal information of nearly every single American adult<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-china-51364382\">silencing doctors and whistleblowers<\/a> about the CCP\u2019s responsibility in the coronavirus pandemic, establishing trust and bolstering collaborations among governments and corporations are lofty goals to set.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NPSSvap4iAQ\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n&#8212;<\/div>\n<p>During the Polygon 2020 live session, WEF Chief Business Officer Jeremy Jurgens said that preventing the next crisis will require that all sectors of society and the economy come together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe that there will be another crisis,\u201d he said. \u201cIt will be more significant. We need to actually start preparing for that now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to start this cooperation and understanding early, so that when the crisis does hit, we\u2019re in a position to respond effectively to it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would anticipate that when we do see this next crisis, it will be faster than what we\u2019ve seen with COVID, the exponential growth rate will be much steeper, the impact will be greater, and as a result the economic and social implications will be even more significant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s really important that we don\u2019t underestimate the severity of a crisis like this \u2014 the impact it could have.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going to take all sectors of society and the economy to come together to address that,\u201d Jurgens added.<\/p>\n<p>The Cyber Polygon 2020 report, along with the virtual sessions recorded during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/events\/the-davos-agenda-2021\/programme\">Davos Week<\/a> at the end of January, 2021, <strong>all highlight the need\/desire for public and private collaboration<\/strong> \u2014 not just as a means to avert a cyber pandemic \u2014 but for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2020\/06\/now-is-the-time-for-a-great-reset\/\">reshaping the entire global economy and revamping all aspects of society<\/a> under a new form of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2021\/01\/what-is-the-difference-between-stakeholder-capitalism-shareholder-capitalism-and-state-capitalism-davos-agenda-2021\/\">stakeholder capitalism<\/a> brought on by the great reset.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Trends Emerging From Digital Pandemic Exercise<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In this article, we looked at three trends emerging Cyber Polygon 2020:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>A greater consolidation of resources and collaborations among corporations and states<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>A plan to deal with fake news, disinformation, and misinformation that has yet to be unveiled<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>A push towards digital identity that will need to be secured and protected<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While these basic observations were plucked from last year\u2019s exercise, this year\u2019s Cyber Polygon will present new challenges in which participants will respond to a different threat \u2014 a targeted supply chain attack on a corporate ecosystem in real-time.<\/p>\n<p>If the results and recommendations from previous pandemic simulations are any indication of what may lie ahead for society, then the findings and policies coming out of Cyber Polygon 2021 may have real-world societal impact in the very near future.<\/p>\n<p>For example, many scenarios played out in the WEF-backed\u00a0fictional pandemic simulations <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centerforhealthsecurity.org\/our-work\/events\/2018_clade_x_exercise\/index.html\">Clade X<\/a> (May, 2018) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centerforhealthsecurity.org\/event201\/\">Event 201<\/a> (October, 2019) later came to pass, along with several policy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centerforhealthsecurity.org\/event201\/recommendations.html\">recommendations<\/a> for dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>These scenarios depicted:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Governments implementing lockdowns worldwide<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The collapse of many industries<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Growing mistrust between governments and citizens<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>A greater adoption of biometric surveillance technologies<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Social media censorship in the name of combating misinformation<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The desire to flood communication channels with \u201cauthoritative\u201d sources<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Mass unemployment<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Rioting in the streets<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>And a whole lot more!<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the coronavirus a pandemic on March 11, 2020, governments all over the world went into lockdown, which\u00a0had devastating effects on the economy with businesses closing, civil unrest skyrocketing, unemployment surging, housing foreclosures on the horizon, and the largest transfer of wealth ever recorded in human history.<\/p>\n<p>However, many of these scenarios were already anticipated and taken into account in previous simulations, and yet they all still came to pass.<\/p>\n<p>Will the conversations coming out of Cyber Polygon 2021 prove to be as prophetic for the digital world as Event 201 and Clade X were for the physical one?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sociable.co\/technology\/prepping-cyber-pandemic-cyber-polygon-stage-supply-chain-attack-simulation\/\">Source<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last October Event 201 simulated a global pandemic that eerily anticipated Covid-19, which appeared two months later in Wuhan.
