The Florida Health Department and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are investigating the death of a Florida doctor who died Jan. 3 from a rare autoimmune disorder he developed on Dec. 21, three days after receiving Pfizer\u2019s COVID vaccine<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As The Defender reported<\/a> last week, Heidi Neckelmann, the wife of Dr. Gregory Michael, said that in her mind, her 56-year-old husband\u2019s death was \u201c100% linked\u201d to the vaccine.<\/p>\n

Now, at least one doctor has come forward publicly to say he also believes the vaccine caused Michael to develop acute idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura<\/a> (ITP), the disorder that killed him.<\/p>\n

According to the New York Times<\/a>:<\/p>\n

\u201cDr. Jerry L. Spivak, an expert on blood disorders at Johns Hopkins University, who was not involved in Dr. Michael\u2019s care, said that based on Ms. Neckelmann\u2019s description, \u2018I think it is a medical certainty that the vaccine was related.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018This is going to be very rare,\u2019 said Dr. Spivak, an emeritus professor of medicine. But he added, \u2018It happened and it could happen again.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Spivak told the Times he based his reasoning on the fact that Michael\u2019s disorder came on quickly after the shot, and \u201cwas so severe that it made his platelet count \u2018rocket\u2019 down.\u201d<\/p>\n

Spivak also offered two other reasons to back up his theory. One, the fact that Michael was healthier and younger than most people who develop chronic forms of ITP. And two, the fact that about 70% of people who develop ITP are women.<\/p>\n

As Spivak told the Times: \u201cA sudden case in a man, especially a relatively young, healthy one, suggests a recent trigger.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pfizer said it is also investigating Michael\u2019s death, though the drugmaker told multiple news outlets it doesn\u2019t \u201cbelieve at this time that there is any direct connection to the vaccine.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shortly after the first reports surfaced of Michael\u2019s death, Pfizer told USA Today<\/a>:<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no indication \u2014 either from large clinical trials<\/a> or among people who have received the vaccine since the government authorized its use last month \u2014 that it could be connected to thrombocytopenia.\u201d<\/p>\n

But, as Lyn Redwood, RN, MSN<\/a>, president of Children\u2019s Health Defense<\/a> (CHD), said last week, Pfizer\u2019s statement doesn\u2019t square with the facts \u2014 because ITP is a well-known adverse event<\/a> associated with vaccinations.<\/p>\n

The vaccine most often implicated in ITP is the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, where the disease occurs in approximately 1 in every 25,000 to 40,000 doses<\/a> of the vaccine, Redwood said.<\/p>\n

ITP has also been associated with hepatitis A and B virus (HBV<\/a>), human papilloma virus (HPV)<\/a>, varicella-zoster, diphteria-tetanus-acellular pertussis (DTap)<\/a>, polio<\/a> and pneumococcus vaccines<\/a>.<\/p>\n

According to Redwood, a study<\/a> comparing adverse effects following influenza vaccination<\/a> found that ITP was the third most common autoimmune condition (after Guillain Barre and rheumatoid arthritis).<\/p>\n

Redwood also pointed out that ITP has been reported to occur<\/a> following exposure to drugs containing polyethylene glycol (PEG)<\/a>, a compound used in both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.<\/p>\n

\u201cConsidering that according to the U.S. Court of Federal Claims<\/a>, cases of ITP have been compensated in the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program<\/a> (NVICP), it is completely disingenuous for vaccine manufacturers to deny this risk,\u201d Redwood said.<\/p>\n

An official with the Miami Dade medical examiner\u2019s office on Jan. 11 told the media<\/a> that the cause of Michael\u2019s death is \u201cpending the completion of studies\u201d by the medical examiner and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.<\/p>\n
