According to Caitlin Johnstone, Trump \u201cdrained no swamps\u201d but packed his cabinet \u201cwith establishment swamp monsters\u201d.\u00a0 Instead of fighting the Deep State, he was actually part of it. Far from being a man of peace, he brought America to the brink of nuclear war and dropped more bombs on civilians than any US president before him, killing record numbers of innocent people. He certainly did not \u201cmake America great again\u201d.\u00a0 [LD]\u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

After weeks of speculation and desperate hopes that Donald Trump might be preparing to pardon NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden<\/a>\u00a0and\/or\u00a0WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange<\/a> before leaving office on January 20th, what the latest round of presidential pardons has delivered is about as far from that as you can conceivably imagine.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIn an audacious pre-Christmas round of pardons,\u201d the New York Times<\/em> reports,\u00a0 \u201cPresident Trump granted clemency on Tuesday to two people convicted in the special counsel\u2019s Russia inquiry, four Blackwater guards convicted in connection with the killing of Iraqi civilians, and three corrupt former Republican members of Congress.\u201d<\/p>\n

I probably don\u2019t need to tell my regular readers this, but a Trump pardon for Assange and Snowden is almost certainly not<\/em> in the cards.<\/p>\n

Trump has done nothing but protect the imperial status quo the entire time he\u2019s been in office and a pardon for either of those heroic government transparency advocates would be a deviation from his established patterns unlike anything he\u2019s ever once demonstrated while in office. It\u2019s\u00a0good to pressure politicians to do the right thing<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0even when they probably won\u2019t, but it\u2019s a safe bet that he won\u2019t.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s entire term has revealed that virtually everyone, all across the US political spectrum, has been wrong about him. And it\u2019s a testament to the power of media echo chambers that for the most part they remain just as wrong about him as they were four years ago.<\/p>\n

\u2014\u00a0 To this day, even after four years of evidence to the contrary, Trump supporters still believe their president has been ending the wars, draining the swamp, and fighting the Deep State. <\/strong><\/h4>\n

\u2014\u00a0 They believe he\u2019s fighting the Deep State even after he imprisoned Assange<\/a>. <\/strong><\/h4>\n

\u2014\u00a0 They believe he\u2019s ending the wars even as he\u2019s ramped up cold war aggressions<\/a> against Russia; killed tens of thousands of Venezuelans<\/a> with starvation sanctions; vetoed attempts to save Yemen<\/a> from US-backed genocide; is working to foment civil war in Iran<\/a>\u00a0using\u00a0starvation sanctions<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0CIA ops<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0the stated goal<\/a> of effecting regime change; occupied Syrian oil fields<\/a> with the goal of preventing Syria\u2019s reconstruction; greatly increased<\/a> the number of troops in the Middle East and elsewhere; greatly increased<\/a>\u00a0the\u00a0number of bombs dropped per day<\/a> from the previous administration, killing record numbers of civilians; <\/a>and reduced military accountability<\/a>\u00a0for those airstrikes. <\/strong><\/h3>\n

\u2014\u00a0 And, finally, they believe he\u2019s draining the swamp after packing his cabinet<\/a> with establishment swamp monsters.<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n

\u2014\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a7\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u2014<\/p>\n

To this day, even after four years of evidence to the contrary, liberals are still convinced that Trump is a servant of Russia who has spent his term advancing the interests of Vladimir Putin. They believe this even as he\u2019s been shredding treaties with Russia<\/a>,\u00a0bombing<\/a>\u00a0the\u00a0Syrian government<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0arming Ukraine<\/a>\u00a0(both<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0which<\/a>\u00a0Obama refused to do),\u00a0many sanctions and many other escalations<\/a>\u00a0directly against the interests and safety of Russia.<\/strong><\/p>\n

To this day, even after four years of evidence to the contrary, many on the left still continue\u00a0their frequent claims<\/a>\u00a0that Trump is a uniquely fascistic or Hitler-like president, despite his having\u00a0far fewer deportations<\/a>\u00a0than Obama had. And despite the fact that he will with absolute certainty leave office on January 20th after losing an election.<\/p>\n

All sides pretended that Trump was a radical deviation from the norm, and so did Trump, when all he actually did throughout his entire time in office was protect the status quo just like his predecessors did.<\/p>\n

After four years everyone \u2013 left, right and center \u2013 has been proven wrong about Trump.<\/p>\n

He was neither a uniquely evil monster, nor a populist hero draining the swamp and fighting for the common man against the Deep State.<\/p>\n

In actuality Trump\u2019s term has clearly established what he really was this entire time: he was a US president. Better than some, worse than others, but also deeply awful all around. Since he voluntarily served as the face of the most evil and destructive force on earth, namely the United States government.<\/p>\n

He was a monster like many of his predecessors: a U.S. president of fairly average depravity. And now he is leaving. With his imaginary crimes still held as real, and his actual crimes completely ignored.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n
