{"id":220946,"date":"2020-11-26T08:11:17","date_gmt":"2020-11-26T08:11:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/?p=220946"},"modified":"2020-11-30T07:22:55","modified_gmt":"2020-11-30T07:22:55","slug":"scoop-israeli-military-prepares-for-possibility-trump-will-strike-iran","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/?p=220946","title":{"rendered":"Scoop: Israeli military prepares for possibility Trump will strike Iran"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Barak Ravid \u2013 Axios Nov 25, 2020<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>The Israel Defense Forces have in recent weeks been instructed to prepare for the possibility that the U.S. will conduct a military strike against Iran before President Trump leaves office, senior Israeli officials tell me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why it matters:<\/strong> The Israeli government instructed the IDF to undertake the preparations not because of any intelligence or assessment that Trump will order such a strike, but because senior Israeli officials anticipate \u201ca very sensitive period\u201d ahead of Biden&#8217;s inauguration on Jan. 20.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The IDF&#8217;s preparedness measures relate to possible Iranian retaliation against Israel directly or through Iranian proxies in Syria, Gaza and Lebanon, the Israeli officials said.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Flashback:<\/strong> Last week, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/11\/16\/us\/politics\/trump-iran-nuclear.html?smid=tw-share\" data-vars-link-text=\"New York Times reported\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/11\/16\/us\/politics\/trump-iran-nuclear.html?smid=tw-share\" data-vars-event-category=\"story\" data-vars-sub-category=\"story\" data-vars-item=\"in_content_link\">New York Times reported<\/a> that Trump raised the possibility of attacking Iran\u2019s uranium enrichment facility in Natanz in a meeting with senior members of his national security team.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Trump raised the idea after being briefed on an International Atomic Energy Agency report about Iran\u2019s growing stockpiles of enriched uranium, but top officials \u2014 including Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo \u2014 warned about the risks of regional escalation, per the Times.<\/li>\n<li>Trump seemed convinced that it would be too risky to strike Iran directly, but has considered other options, the Times reports.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What&#8217;s happening:<\/strong> Israeli minister of defense Benny Gantz spoke twice in the last two weeks with Christopher Miller, Trump&#8217;s acting defense secretary. They discussed Iran as well as Syria and defense cooperation.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Last Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/israels-netanyahu-saudi-for-pompeo-crown-prince-talks-329f800e-dd10-45e0-b0e6-d49aced366f7.html\" data-vars-link-text=\"met in Saudi Arabia\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/israels-netanyahu-saudi-for-pompeo-crown-prince-talks-329f800e-dd10-45e0-b0e6-d49aced366f7.html\" data-vars-event-category=\"story\" data-vars-sub-category=\"story\" data-vars-item=\"in_content_link\">met in Saudi Arabia<\/a> with Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman. One of the main issues discussed was Iran, Israeli officials say.<\/li>\n<li>Pompeo visited Israel and several Gulf countries last week to discuss Iran. State Department officials traveling with Pompeo told reporters \u201call options are on the table.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>While Pompeo was in the Gulf, U.S. Central Command announced that B-52 strategic bombers conducted\u00a0a\u00a0\u201cshort-notice,\u00a0long-range mission into the\u00a0Middle East\u00a0to deter aggression and reassure U.S. partners and allies.&#8221; That was seen as another signal to Iran.<\/li>\n<li>Hossein Dehghan, an adviser to Iran\u2019s leader and a possible candidate in Iran&#8217;s upcoming presidential elections, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/donald-trump-iran-hossein-dehghan-only-on-ap-islam-4e75455399f8a3e6477e48b24d683306\" data-vars-link-text=\"told AP\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/donald-trump-iran-hossein-dehghan-only-on-ap-islam-4e75455399f8a3e6477e48b24d683306\" data-vars-event-category=\"story\" data-vars-sub-category=\"story\" data-vars-item=\"in_content_link\">told AP<\/a> last week that a U.S. military strike against Iran could set off a \u201cfull-fledged war\u201d in the Middle East.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s next: <\/strong>Senior Israeli officials tell me they expect Israel will get prior notice ahead of any U.S. strike against Iran. But they&#8217;re concerned that won&#8217;t be sufficient to fully prepare.
