But whoever emerges from this deluge of sludge, fraud and propaganda to become president of the United States, there has undoubtedly already been one big loser \u2013 freedom of speech.<\/h5>\n<h5>Late on Tuesday night\/early Wednesday morning, Donald Trump \u2013 the elected President of the United States \u2013 emerged from the White House to make a speech.<\/h5>\n<h5>He accused the Democratic party, the political establishment, the media and tech giants\/social media companies of working together to steal the election and put Biden in the Whitehouse.<\/h5>\n<h5>You likely didn\u2019t see all of it, because most of the mainstream news channels simply refused to broadcast it. Watch this clip:<\/h5>\n<div align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KIT9MD8ynQU\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n&#8212;<\/div>\n<h5>That same night, MSNBC had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/election-2020\/shepard-smith-cuts-off-briefing-with-a-scathing-rebuke-what-trumps-saying-is-absolutely-untrue-and-were-not-going-to-allow-it-to-keep-going\/\"><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">cut away from another of Trump\u2019s speeches<\/span><\/a>, with anchor Shepard Smith claiming that what the president was saying \u201cwas in large part absolutely untrue\u201d.<\/h5>\n<h5>Social media companies were doing the same thing. Within hours of it being set up Facebook <span style=\"color: #ffff00;\"><a style=\"color: #ffff00;\" href=\"https:\/\/justthenews.com\/nation\/technology\/facebook-deletes-stop-steal-group-enforces-emergency-limiting-protocols-post\">deleted a group protesting the election result<\/a><\/span>, while twitter reduced the President\u2019s timeline to this:<\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"unfiltered aligncenter size-full wp-image-70337\" src=\"https:\/\/off-guardian.org\/wp-content\/medialibrary\/EmPqhNJXIAUPaMB.png?x91011\" sizes=\"(max-width: 661px) 100vw, 661px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/off-guardian.org\/wp-content\/medialibrary\/EmPqhNJXIAUPaMB.png 661w, https:\/\/off-guardian.org\/wp-content\/medialibrary\/EmPqhNJXIAUPaMB-500x461.png 500w\" alt=\"\" width=\"661\" height=\"609\" \/><\/p>\n<h5>This isn\u2019t about defending Donald Trump, or even agreeing that the election was rigged (although there is plenty of evidence to suspect as much). This is about a principle. Donald Trump is the elected head of state, and he is being denied a platform to address the people he represents by the faceless servants of corporate media oligarchs.<\/h5>\n<h5>This is a terrible, terrifyingly awful precedent to set.<\/h5>\n<h5>The owners of Comcast or Warner Bros or Disney or Facebook or Twitter are <strong>not<\/strong> elected officials. They have <em>no legal authority<\/em>, and thus <em>no accountability<\/em>. Yet they are claiming the right to determine what elected officials can and cannot say to the people who elected them.<\/h5>\n<h5>There is a strain of thought that this kind of censorship is justified. <em>\u201cSpreading disinformation puts lives at risk\u201d<\/em>, they say. <em>\u201cIf the media stopped people lying we wouldn\u2019t be in this mess\u201d<\/em> or <em>\u201cthe news should only broadcast the truth!\u201d<\/em>.<\/h5>\n<h5>The argument goes that <em>\u201callowing Donald Trump to \u201cpublicly undermine our democratic institutions will erode the public trust and could lead to violence.\u201d <\/em><\/h5>\n<h5>But I would argue that empowering billionaires to hold a monopoly on \u201cthe truth\u201d is far more dangerous to democracy than anything Trump could ever say.<\/h5>\n<h5>To people inclined to disagree, I leave these five questions. Answer them, if you can:<\/h5>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<h5>Who made the decision to censor the elected President of the United States?<\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5>Who granted them this power?<\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5>Whose interests do they serve?<\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5>To whom are they accountable?<\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5>In the future, who gets to decide \u201cthe truth\u201d?<\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Can you spare $1.00 a month to support independent media<\/h3>\n<h5>Unlike the Guardian we are NOT funded by Bill &amp; Melinda Gates, or any other NGO or government.
