\"\"<\/a>The World Health Organisation has backflipped on<\/strong> its original COVID-19 stance after calling for world leaders to stop locking down their countries and economies.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. David Nabarro from the WHO appealed to world leaders yesterday, telling them to stop \u201cusing lockdowns as your primary control method\u201d<\/strong> of the\u00a0coronavirus<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

He also claimed that the only thing lockdowns achieved was poverty<\/strong> \u2013 with no mention of the potential lives saved.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLockdowns just have one consequence <\/strong>that you must never ever belittle, and that is making poor people an awful lot poorer,\u201d<\/strong> he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe in the World Health Organisation do not advocate lockdowns as the primary means of control of this virus,\u201d<\/strong> Dr Nabarro\u00a0told\u00a0<\/a>The Spectator<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe only time we believe a lockdown is justified is to buy you time to reorganise, regroup, rebalance your resources, protect your health workers who are exhausted, but by and large, we\u2019d rather not do it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr Nabarro\u2019s main criticism of lockdowns involved the global impact, explaining how poorer economies that had been indirectly affected.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cJust look at what\u2019s happened to the tourism industry in the Caribbean, for example, or in the Pacific because people aren\u2019t taking their holidays,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLook what\u2019s happened to smallholder farmers all over the world. \u2026 Look what\u2019s happening to poverty levels.<\/strong> It seems that we may well have a doubling of world poverty by next year. We may well have at least a doubling of child malnutrition.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Melbourne\u2019s lockdown has been hailed as one of the strictest and longest in the world. In Spain\u2019s lockdown in March,\u00a0people weren\u2019t allowed to leave the house unless it was to walk their pet<\/a><\/strong><\/span>. In China,\u00a0authorities welded doors shut to stop people from leaving their homes<\/a><\/strong><\/span>. The WHO thinks these steps were largely unnecessary.<\/span><\/p>\n

Instead, Dr Nabarro is advocating for a new approach to containing the virus.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd so, we really do appeal to all world leaders: stop using lockdown as your primary control method.<\/strong> Develop better systems for doing it. Work together and learn from each other.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

His message is timely. In a world first, a number of health experts from all over the world came together calling for an end to coronavirus lockdowns earlier this week.<\/span><\/p>\n

They created a petition, called the Great Barrington Declaration, which said that lockdowns were doing \u201cirreparable damage.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAs infectious disease epidemiologists and public health scientists, we have grave concerns about the damaging physical and mental health impacts of the prevailing COVID-19 policies, and recommend an approach we call Focused Protection,\u201d read the petition.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cCurrent lockdown policies are producing devastating effects on short and long-term public health.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The petition has had 12,000 signatures so far.<\/span><\/p>\n

It was authored by Sunetra Gupta of the University of Oxford, Jay Bhattacharya of Stanford University, and Martin Kulldorff of Harvard University.<\/span><\/p>\n

When asked about the petition, Dr Nabarro had only good things to say. \u201cReally important point by Professor Gupta,\u201d<\/strong> he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

What Nabarro was actually saying<\/strong><\/span><\/a> in April-March:<\/span><\/p>\n

There is pain associated with a lockdown implemented again but the government must do whatever is good to contain the virus. Speed is very important.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

When history will be written, we will be judged on the basis of how fast we reacted to contain this pandemic.\u00a0There will come a time where we will assess in great detail how did it all start and fix accountability. Now is not the time.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

I would also like to tell all the world leaders the same thing.<\/strong> This is a time where all of us should rise above blame and help fight this invisible enemy.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lock down and don\u2019t ask questions! You will be judged by how quickly you locked down! Yeah, sounds very much like \u2018it only breeds poverty\u2019 and \u2018we never liked it\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

The only conclusion here is that Dr. Nabbaro is a stumbling village idiot that no one should take seriously. Why did anyone listen to him in March?<\/span><\/p>\n
