\"\"<\/a>Early Jewish settlers in Palestine \u201clooted Arab property\u201d, a new book by an Israeli historian has said, adding \u201cauthorities turned a blind eye\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

In what has been described as the \u201cfirst-ever comprehensive study\u201d by Israeli historian Adam Raz described \u201cthe extent to which Jews looted Arab property\u201d during the Jewish gangs\u2019 attack\u00a0in 1948<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0on Palestinians and their homes, and explains why Ben-Gurion said \u201cmost of the Jews are thieves.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Writing in\u00a0Haaretz<\/em>, Ofer Aderet\u2019s review of Raz\u2019s book was entitled: \u201cJewish\u00a0soldiers and\u00a0civilians\u00a0looted Arab\u00a0neighbors\u2019\u00a0property en\u00a0masse in \u201948. The\u00a0authorities\u00a0turned a\u00a0blind\u00a0eye<\/em>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Another senior writer at\u00a0Haaretz<\/em>, Gideon Levy,\u00a0commented<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0that the words \u201cmost of the Jews are thieves\u201d, \u201cwasn\u2019t uttered by an antisemitic leader, a Jew hater or a neo-Nazi, but by the founder of the State of Israel, two months after it was founded.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Levy said that the Israeli authorities \u201cturned a blind eye and thus encouraged the looting, despite all the denunciations, the pretense and a few ridiculous trials.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The looting served a national purpose: to quickly\u00a0complete the ethnic cleansing\u00a0of most of the country of its Arabs, and to see to it that 700,000 refugees would never even imagine returning to their homes<\/span><\/p>\n

he explained.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Israeli writer added: \u201cEven before Israel managed to destroy most of the houses, and wipe from the face of the earth more than 400 villages, came this mass looting to empty them out, so that the refugees would have no reason to return.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Levy also said that the looters \u201cwere motivated not only by ugly greed to possess stolen property right after the war was over, property belonging in some cases to people who were their neighbors just the day before, and not only by the desire to get rich quick by looting household items and ornaments, some of them very costly\u2026, but they served, consciously or unconsciously, the ethnic purification project that Israel has tried in vain to deny all through the years.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAlmost everyone took part\u201d in the looting, he added, which \u201cwas the small looting, the one that proved if only for a moment that \u2018most of the Jews are thieves,\u2019 as the founding father said. But that was mini-looting compared to the institutionalized looting of property, houses, villages and cities \u2013 the looting of the land.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDenial and repression\u201d were part of the reasons why heads of Jewish community allowed the looting of Arab property in Palestine. He said: \u201cThirst for revenge and drunkenness with victory after the difficult war might perhaps explain, even partially, the participation of so many.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Levy said that \u201cthe looting reflects not only momentary human weakness but is intended to serve a clear strategic goal \u2013 purifying the country of its inhabitants \u2013 words fail.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Concluding his article, Levy said: \u201cAnyone who believes that a solution will ever be found to the conflict without proper atonement and compensation for these acts, is living in an illusion.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He asked Israel to \u201cthink about the feelings of the descendants, the Arabs of Israel and\u00a0the Palestinian refugees, who are living with us and alongside us. They see the pictures and read these things \u2013 what crosses their minds?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He answers: \u201cThey will never be able to see the villages of their ancestors: Israel demolished most of them, to leave not a shred,\u201d noting that \u201cone small stolen souvenir from the home that was lost might cause a tear to fall.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Adding: \u201cJust ask the Jews enraged over any stolen Jewish property.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
