The CEO of office messaging app Slack announced in June that he and his wife made large donations to organizations leading the \u201cdefund the police\u201d movement, less than a year after Slack expanded its partnership with a company manufacturing robot security guards.<\/span><\/p>\n

Slack and Cobalt Robotics announced in October that they would integrate the two products, building off a previous partnership in which Slack used Cobalt\u2019s machines to protect Slack headquarters. Cobalt\u2019s \u201crobots have been patrolling the hallways at Slack offices for some time now,\u201d the robotics firm noted in a press releas<\/strong><\/span>e<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen Cobalt detects anything that needs escalation or further review\u2014from an unauthorized visitor to CO emissions to a water leak\u2014it triggers a real-time alert in a designated Slack channel,\u201d the release said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Slack CEO Stewart Butterfield, who co-founded the company in 2009, announced in June that he and his wife would make a $700,000 donation<\/a><\/strong><\/span> to Color of Change, Black Lives Matter and several other organizations in June, Protocol<\/strong><\/span><\/a> reported. The couple also pledged to match up to $300,000 in employee donations to those organizations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Both Color of Change and Black Lives Matter openly support defunding the nation\u2019s police departments.<\/span><\/p>\n

Color of Change is leading a national\u00a0petition campaign<\/a><\/strong><\/span> demanding elected officials \u201cdefund the police, and invest in communities now!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPolicing is a violent institution that must end,\u201d Color of Change President Rashad Robinson said<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0after the Minneapolis City Council\u00a0voted to \u201cdismantle\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/a> its police department.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe imagine a country where there is enough money to educate our children, care for our sick and feed those who are financially unstable,\u201d Robinson continued. \u201cDefunding the police allows for this vision.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Black Lives Matter Global Network, the national arm of Black Lives Matter, released a statement on May 30<\/strong><\/span><\/a> calling for \u201ca national defunding of police.\u201d The organization published a video<\/a><\/strong><\/span> on July 6 arguing that \u201cdefunding the police is the only way to stop pouring resources into a system that doesn\u2019t keep us safe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Both Black Lives Matter and Color of Change have seen an explosion in donations from large corporations<\/strong><\/span><\/a> and celebrities<\/strong><\/span><\/a> since George Floyd\u2019s death in police custody on May 25.<\/span><\/p>\n

Polling has consistently<\/a><\/strong><\/span> shown that a majority<\/a><\/strong><\/span> of Americans oppose<\/a><\/strong><\/span> defunding the police. (RELATED:\u00a0Alice Johnson Accosted By Demonstrators Outside White House)<\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Neither Slack nor Cobalt returned repeated requests for comment for this article.<\/span><\/p>\n
