For talented young artist Maria Farmer, it was the night she\u2019d been working towards for months \u2014 her graduation show at the prestigious New York Academy of Art.<\/span><\/p>\n

Maria, then 25, was ecstatic, having sold all three of her exhibited paintings for five-figure sums.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then a senior staff member appeared at her shoulder, took her arm and pointed out two people she\u2019d never seen before.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018This couple here are going to buy your art . . . they\u2019re very important benefactors of the academy,\u2019 she was told.<\/span><\/p>\n

It was Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, and they got the painting they wanted \u2014 a semi-naked man observing a sleeping girl, inspired by Edgar Degas\u2019s The Rape \u2014 for $6,000, half the price Maria had been offered earlier.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fast-forward 25 years and this week Maria\u2019s younger sister gave an emotional statement to a Manhattan court about why Maxwell should not be granted bail.<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking via an audio feed from her home in Texas, psychotherapist Annie Farmer, one of three women whose claims are the basis for the criminal case against the British socialite, said Maxwell was a \u2018sexual predator\u2019 who had \u2018never shown any remorse for her heinous crimes or the devastating, lasting effects her actions caused\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Maria, who says she feels guilty for unwittingly bringing her then teenage sister into the orbit of Maxwell and Epstein, was the first person to report the pair\u2019s alleged sexual abuse of underage girls in 1996. But her attempts to get the police and FBI to investigate the attack on Annie, then 16, were ignored, leaving Epstein free to pursue his depravity.<\/span><\/p>\n

The sisters\u2019 story is shocking and their determination to get justice remarkable. Now, at last, their voices are being heard. Annie\u2019s testimony was a key factor in the judge\u2019s decision to deny Maxwell bail and keep her in a New York jail cell before her trial next year \u2014 which is as it should be, Maria told the Mail yesterday.<\/span><\/p>\n

For her, Epstein \u2014 who was found dead in his remand jail cell last year \u2014 isn\u2019t the worst villain in this scandal.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018That woman was much more sinister than Epstein, and to me, much more dangerous,\u2019 she says. \u2018She was definitely the mastermind. She was in charge.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

Maria worked for Epstein, a financial guru, for a year, during which time she says she saw first hand Maxwell\u2019s astonishing charm and her terrifying viciousness.<\/span><\/p>\n

The smart and well-bred English woman \u2014 a \u2018cool sister\u2019 figure at first, Maria says \u2014 showered her with kindness and attention. But, Maria claims, she also tried to inveigle her in her hideous enterprise of procuring young girls for Epstein.<\/span><\/p>\n

Maria says she fled after the couple sexually assaulted her. Later, to her utter horror, she discovered they had done the same to her 16-year-old sister, Annie.<\/span><\/p>\n

Even then, she says Maxwell pursued her with dire threats against her safety and forced her into years of hiding.<\/span><\/p>\n

Maria has rarely discussed her ordeal but, her voice often shaking with emotion, she described her joy that Maxwell \u2014 who denies sex trafficking and perjury charges \u2014 is finally facing justice.<\/span><\/p>\n

Her first impression of Epstein and Maxwell in New York was not favourable \u2014 not least because she was directed to sell them one of her paintings at a loss. \u2018My first impression was that they were very cheap but also very strange,\u2019 she says. \u2018I kind of felt sorry for them because she was dressed so garishly and I just felt \u201cYuck.\u201d \u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

However, the next time she met Maxwell \u2014 when she was invited to stay on Epstein\u2019s ranch in New Mexico with other alumni from her art school \u2014 Maria thought \u2018she was the most elegant thing in the world\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

She explains: \u2018Ghislaine rode up on this white horse in this fabulous equestrian attire. Very elegant and well-spoken. She was charming.\u2019 Several months after the art show, Epstein offered Maria a $1,000-a-month job managing his art collection and later manning the reception at the vast mansion he was renovating in Manhattan, the location of many of his subsequent sex crimes, and where Prince Andrew was later a guest.<\/span><\/p>\n

As soon as Epstein moved into the house, one of the largest private residences in the city, the endless trail of passing workmen and decorators stopped and, says Maria, \u2018it started getting weird\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

The visitors were now \u2018children\u2019 \u2014 girls so young that some were wearing braces and school uniforms \u2014 and, sometimes arriving at the same time were \u2018prominent individuals\u2019 whose names she doesn\u2019t want to disclose.<\/span><\/p>\n

Maxwell, she says, told her the underage girls were auditioning as models for Victoria\u2019s Secret, a lingerie brand owned by Epstein\u2019s friend and client, billionaire Les Wexner, and for a fashion venture she and Epstein called the Limited Corporation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Maria says she once met Donald Trump in Epstein\u2019s office and says the future U.S. president cast an appraising eye over her before Epstein said: \u2018She\u2019s not for you.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

Given they were supposedly hiring models, neither Epstein nor Maxwell had to hide the fact that the girls were underage. Maria claims she recalls how Maxwell would fly out of the house on the hunt for new blood around 3pm each day when school ended, screaming: \u2018I need to get the nubiles!\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

In return, Epstein spoiled Maxwell, says Maria. She had an entire floor at each of his homes. In his New York mansion, it was decorated pink and was \u2018incredibly lush\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

Her private quarters at Epstein\u2019s Palm Beach house in Florida included a room with what Maxwell is said to have called a \u2018sex swing\u2019, and another outlandish device that she boasted was the secret of her youthful appearance. \u2018I hang upside down like a bat for 45 minutes and it makes me look really young,\u2019 she told Maria.<\/span><\/p>\n

Both Epstein and Maxwell could lay on the charm and flattery when they wanted, says Maria. Epstein \u2018made you feel like he was the most special person on Earth\u2019, while Maxwell \u2018made you feel special and safe\u2019, she recalls.<\/span><\/p>\n

Indeed, the couple told Maria they were married \u2018to make me feel safe\u2019. They would take her and other young women out for outings \u2014 shopping, rollerblading or the cinema.<\/span><\/p>\n

Maxwell \u2018would just dote on you \u2014 make you\u2019d feel like you\u2019d won the lottery and that, wow, I must be really cool because this super-smart lady from Great Britain is paying attention to me\u2019, she says. \u2018You know when you\u2019re young you just think the accent is so cool. Hers was so proper and posh.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, she has no doubt what lay behind the love-bombing. \u2018They were grooming me,\u2019 she says simply \u2014 and, indirectly, plotting to get access to her sister.<\/span><\/p>\n

In her mid-20s at the time, Maria is convinced she was too old to be of sexual interest to Epstein. But Maxwell \u2014 who allegedly employed a group of younger Epstein acolytes to satisfy his vast appetite for new underage girls \u2014 had other uses for her.<\/span><\/p>\n

Around six months after she started working for Epstein, Maria says Maxwell invited her to her own apartment on New York\u2019s Upper East Side.<\/span><\/p>\n

There, she made a play for sympathy by claiming that while she only wanted Epstein\u2019s love, he \u2018just loves all these women\u2019 and admitted they weren\u2019t married, but \u2018just dating\u2019. She told Maria that a teenage girl was coming round whom she was determined to make a Victoria\u2019s Secret model.<\/span><\/p>\n

Maxwell wanted Maria to convince her what a wonderful couple she and Epstein were to work for.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018She was beautiful with long, blonde hair,\u2019 recalls Maria of the 19-year-old whom she claims Maxwell conceded was \u2018older than Jeffrey usually wants\u2019. The girl told Maria an extraordinary story of what had just happened \u2014 Epstein, a stranger, had said hello to her as she\u2019d been walking through Central Park with her boyfriend. Epstein had then called Maxwell. who, it is said, rushed into the park and, after an hour, tracked the girl down and asked her about modelling.<\/span><\/p>\n

Epstein relied on Maxwell to procure girls \u2018one million per cent\u2019, claims Maria. \u2018He was extremely awkward with women. He had zero sex vibe. I couldn\u2019t figure out whether he was gay or what.\u2019 When Maxwell was out of earshot, Maria whispered to the girl that Epstein never paid her properly. Maxwell never again asked her to help recruit anyone, she says.<\/span><\/p>\n

As time passed, and able to observe Maxwell on a daily basis in Epstein\u2019s mansion, Maria says she soon saw a far less pleasant side to her.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018What made her tick was power and control over vulnerable people,\u2019 she claims, not least the Filipina maids whom she treated as though they were barely human.<\/span><\/p>\n

It has been alleged Maxwell often joined in with Epstein in his sexual assaults on underage girls, but Maria believes she was drawn by power rather than lust.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018She was an emotional terrorist with a sado-masochistic side \u2014 she enjoyed harming people and having that power and control,\u2019 she declares .<\/span><\/p>\n

It is the prosecution\u2019s case that they acted as one in their alleged sex crimes, but Epstein and Maxwell were very different personalities, Maria claims.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Epstein definitely had a dark side, but Maxwell would turn on a dime into a very malicious, brutal human being \u2014 and I never saw that of Epstein,\u2019 she claims. \u2018She would just suddenly become psychotic, and it scared me to death.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

A sheet of paper incorrectly placed on a desk was enough for Maxwell to \u2018vent\u2019 such fury that it made Maria cry. Then Epstein would come and dry her tears. \u2018It was a sick pattern for them \u2014 good cop, bad cop.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

Maria may have been too old for Epstein\u2019s tastes but that didn\u2019t stop him and Maxwell molesting her, she alleges, in what she claims was an attempt to strengthen their power over her.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is said to have happened in the summer of 1996 after Epstein invited Maria to paint at Les Wexner\u2019s vast estate in Ohio \u2014 at the time she was working on a series of pictures of pubescent girls and using photos of her two younger sisters as models.<\/span><\/p>\n

She claims that Epstein and Maxwell came to visit her. That night, she said Maxwell asked her to give Epstein a foot massage. She thought it \u2018so inappropriate\u2019, but obliged.<\/span><\/p>\n

It became far, far worse when the trio ended up lying on Epstein\u2019s bed with Maria in the middle and the other two \u2018mechanically\u2019 groping her, she claims. Maria allgeges that they twisted her nipples painfully, and insulted her about her small stature and large bust.<\/span><\/p>\n

As she wept, Maxwell is said to have reassured her: \u2018Shhh, it\u2019s going to be OK.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

She says she was scared that she was going to be raped, and so ran back to her bedroom and barricaded the door. She didn\u2019t emerge until she knew the couple had left in the morning .<\/span><\/p>\n

When she did, she claims she discovered that three nude photos \u2014 two of Annie and another of their 12-year-old sister \u2014 were missing .<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018It was emotionally devastating for me but mainly because the whole time I was thinking: \u201cMy sister\u2019s been alone with them . . . Oh my God,\u201d \u2019 she told me.<\/span><\/p>\n

For by then, Maria claims Epstein and Maxwell had inveigled Annie into their twisted world.<\/span><\/p>\n

In fact, Maria is convinced that one of the reasons the couple spent so much time grooming her, as she says, was so they could get access to her teenage sister.<\/span><\/p>\n

As soon as he knew of her existence, Epstein asked to see photos of Annie, says Maria who claims she remembers Maxwell looking at them and saying: \u2018She\u2019s perfect.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

Maria knew the couple were \u2018weird\u2019 but says she had no notion they might, as she believes, have sexual designs on her underage sister.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is said they tried to persuade Maria to bring Annie to New York to be a model, but that held no appeal for the brainy teenager who had academic ambitions.<\/span><\/p>\n

When he discovered Annie wanted to go to university, it is said that Epstein saw his opportunity and offered to help financially, flying her to New York from the family home in Arizona. Annie found Epstein to be charming \u2014 until he took the sisters to the cinema.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sitting between them, Epstein began rubbing Annie\u2019s hand and then her lower leg. She let it pass and did not tell her older sister. He then offered to pay for Annie to visit Thailand to improve her CV for college applications \u2014 but first invited her to his new ranch for the weekend. Annie assumed she\u2019d be one of many students there who were benefiting from Epstein\u2019s largesse, but she arrived to find herself alone with Epstein and Maxwell.<\/span><\/p>\n

She claims that Maxwell repeatedly asked her if she wanted a massage and she finally gave in. Annie claims that she ended up being topless and lying on her back as Maxwell massaged her chest in an \u2018inappropriate\u2019 way. She sensed Epstein was nearby, watching.<\/span><\/p>\n

But the \u2018scariest moment\u2019 of the weekend, Annie claims, was when Epstein came into her bedroom one morning and asked for a \u2018cuddle\u2019, crawling into bed with her. \u2018He was touching me and I don\u2019t know how long that lasted because I was sort of checking out a bit,\u2019 she has said.<\/span><\/p>\n

She says that she eventually excused herself and hid in the bathroom.<\/span><\/p>\n

Maria claims it was only after her own sexual ordeal at the hands of Epstein and Maxwell that she spoke to her sister about it and was horrified to discover what had happened to Annie.<\/span><\/p>\n

Back home in New York, Maria went to the police but they told her that alleged offences committed in Ohio and New Mexico were outside their jurisdiction. She called the FBI and spent half an hour describing what had happened. The FBI never rang back.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2003, the sisters spoke to Vanity Fair magazine, which was researching an article about Epstein\u2019s business activities. Maria says Maxwell started making threatening calls soon after, making clear she knew her movements in the city and telling her: \u2018Better be careful and watch your back.\u2019 The eventual story omitted all mention of them.<\/span><\/p>\n

Maria left New York and went into hiding, renovating houses for a living.<\/span><\/p>\n

She says it\u2019s \u2018disgusting\u2019 that it took so long to bring Epstein and Maxwell to justice, but she\u2019s savouring the moment of the latter\u2019s downfall.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Revenge is best served cold like this because Ghislaine wasn\u2019t expecting it,\u2019 she says. \u2018If you\u2019d got away with something for a quarter of a century, why would you expect that to change.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

What does she hope happens to Maxwell now? \u2018I hope she sits there [in prison] for ever. I also hope it really pains her to know she\u2019s just this plebeian prisoner with a number,\u2019 Maria states.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018I have waited 25 years \u2014 half my life \u2014 for this and, for Annie and me, it\u2019s a miracle.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n
