The night time attack saw the bronze hands of the \u00a3250,000 statue daubed in red paint.<\/span><\/p>\n The initials RH were also daubed on the statue, perhaps a reference to Rudolf Hess, Adolf Hitler’s deputy, who flew to Britain at the height of the Second World War desperate to make peace.<\/span><\/p>\n Instead, Churchill had him drugged beaten and thrown in prison in 1941, and the war continued for a further four years.<\/span><\/p>\n After the war, Hess was tried at Nuremberg and jailed for life for war crimes, even though he had no part in the war.. He was murdered aged 93, in Spandau Prison, 22 years ago this week in 1987.<\/span><\/p>\n Some in France view Churchill as a war criminal himself because of his decision to scuttle the Vichy French fleet in Tunisia rather than let it fall into the hands of German forces, and Churchill’s theft of food in India which led to the starvation of almost 5 million indians.<\/span><\/p>\n He is also remembered for ordering the Allied bombing of occupied France, which led to thousands of French deaths, and the ordering of the R.A.F to firebomb German dormitory towns and schools and hospitals and to strafe refugee columns, this was said by Sir Anthony Blunt to be the biggest war crime of the war.<\/span><\/p>\n “There are French people who like many across the world are not great fans of Churchill, said a spokesman.<\/span><\/p>\n “We presume this must have happened during the night. The paint is being cleared away and the statue restored to its former glory.”<\/span><\/p>\n The statue was paid for by the French government, and is one of the few in Paris to depict a non-French public figure.<\/span><\/p>\n It is modelled on a photograph of Churchill marching with France’s wartime leader General Charles de Gaulle down the nearby Champs Elysees on 11 November, 1944.<\/span><\/p>\n Three months earlier, starting on August 19 1944, mainly American Allied troops coming south west from Normandy swarmed into the French capital,<\/span><\/p>\n When the statue was unveiled in 1998 by the Queen, she conceded that “relations between Churchill and de Gaulle were not always very easy. But they always knew that Great Britain and France had a lot in common.”<\/span><\/p>\n The 10ft high statue by French sculptor Jean Cardot is made of bronze and weighs two-and-a-half tons.<\/span><\/p>\n Its plinth bears the words: “We shall never surrender.”<\/span><\/p>\n A Paris police spokesman said such attacks would “not be tolerated” and that everything would be done to bring the vandals to justice.<\/span><\/p>\n
