Downing Street has been forced to clarify that officers won\u2019t be checking what people buy in supermarkets after yet another tweet by a police force that doesn\u2019t understand the coronavirus lockdown laws.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The controversy began when Cambridge Police tweeted that they were monitoring \u201cnon-essential\u201d supermarket aisles in a local branch of Tesco to make sure people weren\u2019t purchasing frivolous items.<\/span><\/p>\n

This prompted a public backlash from people asking the police to define precisely what a \u201cnon-essential\u201d item was.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cambridge Police walked back the original tweet, stating, \u201cWe are not monitoring what people are buying from supermarkets. This message was sent with good intentions by an over exuberant officer who has been spoken to since this tweet was published.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
