Introduction \u2013 March 8, 2020<\/h1>\n

Overwhelmed by a tide of displaced persons, Greek islanders are hitting back at those they see as responsible for the crisis. This includes United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) officials and journalists working for the mainstream media.<\/h5>\n
\"\"<\/a>On Saturday night a fire tore through a refugee centre on the island of Lesbos. Although the cause of the fire is still unknown, given rising tensions over the refugee crisis we wouldn\u2019t be surprised if arson was involved.<\/h5>\n
The fire follows attacks on journalists reporting on the crisis and islanders themselves actively preventing \u201crefugees\u201d\/\u201dasylum seekers\u201d from landing.<\/h5>\n
Although we don\u2019t condone the islander\u2019s actions we can understand their anger. The corporate media invariably portrays the \u201crefugees\u201d\/\u201dasylum seekers\u201d in a sympathetic light but rarely acknowledges the fact that many are economic migrants who have been lured to Europe by the prospect of generous welfare handouts<\/a><\/span>.<\/h5>\n
The corporate media has also consistently ignored the role of organised crime and human traffickers in the crisis<\/span><\/a>.<\/h5>\n
Add to that the fact that the media has played down the role that billionaire George Soros has played in financing migrant support groups<\/span><\/a>, and its easy to understand why locals are angry. Ed.<\/h5>\n

Greek Islanders Attack Journalists Covering Refugee Boat Pushback<\/h1>\n

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said Greek officials should investigate attacks on reporters covering the arrival of migrants and refugees on the island of Lesbos, assaulted after trying to document islanders keeping away a boat with women and children.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cGreek authorities must quickly and thoroughly investigate the attacks on reporters covering refugee movements on the island of Lesvos and ensure that they can continue their reporting safely and without fear,\u201d said CPJ Europe and Central Asia Program Coordinator Gulnoza Said in New York.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cGreek police have an obligation to protect members of the press,\u201d she said, with video footage showing German photojournalist Michael Trammer being beaten and kicked to the ground by a furious mob before some Greeks tried to stop it.<\/span><\/p>\n

A group of locals attempted to stop a dinghy carrying migrants from coming in to berth at Thermi port and attacked the reporters who were capturing it, trying to prevent any coverage of the event.<\/span><\/p>\n
